That we would have a scale virtually unique to that flute (possibly matching some other obscure scale in some parts of the world, but not matching any known historically widespread scale in use). The problem with this non-conclusion is that since the hole-spacings discussed in this essay have only a one-in-hundreds chance to match a pattern of 4 notes in the diatonic major/minor scales, then this conclusion would require accepting a remarkable against-the-odds coincidence of spacings.

Researchers have identified what they say are the oldest-known musical instruments in the world. The flutes, made from bird bone and mammoth ivory, come from a cave in southern Germany which contains early evidence for the occupation of Europe by modern humans - Homo sapiens. Scientists used carbon dating to show that the flutes were between 42,000 and 43,000 years old. The findings are described in the Journal of Human Evolution. A team led by Prof Tom Higham at Oxford University dated animal bones in the same ground layers as the flutes at Geissenkloesterle Cave in Germany's Swabian Jura. Prof Nick...

Here are two old songs to ponder and enjoy for what they were, and for what they meant at that time. I don't compare them to each other, the songs have been flying to and fro in my head, so perhaps they 'want to be written about'. In this corner you have Sir Donovan Leitch of Scotland, made his fame in England with Mellow Yellow, Wear Your Love Like Heaven and others. People forget that 1967 didn't just bring us Sergeant Pepper, we also heard a most intriquing stanza of First there is mountain, then thereis no mountain, then there...

Rush Limbaugh Spurns Plea By Ex-Advertiser To Be Accepted Back By Mark WhittingtonMarch 10, 2012 The imbroglio over Rush Limbaugh, his unfortunate remarks about a student activist, and his advertisers took a bizarre turn when one advertiser who publicly denounced Limbaugh last week and pulled its ads, begged to be taken back. The advertiser in question is Sleep Train, a mattress company. According to the Los Angeles Times, Limbaugh has turned down its request to be reinstated as a voiced advertiser, which involved the host himself endorsing the company. The reason was that Sleep Train's action had angered Limbaugh's many...

Any suggestions on Christmas music that you have played? I have three I'm working on, now. "Petit Enfant" (Robert J. Ward choral), "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus", and "The Coventry Carol". Any other suggestions for flute and piano accompaniment? My accompanist is awesome and can read ANYTHING. She's a JOY to work with. I have two other 'gigs' I'm still trying to dig up music for. One of I thought of is "What Child Is This". Also, maybe, a couple of Rutter pieces. Thanks! RIMTB

The others, entitled "La Francia," "La Spagna" and "L'Inghilterro" remain lost. The musical score, which scholars believe may never have been performed, was found and authenticated by Southampton University research fellow Andrew Woolley. "This piece was previously...

Professor blows new life into ancient flute (China Daily) Updated: 2004-04-26 08:47 Few Chinese people have heard of the yue, an ancient wind instrument that belonged to the flute family. However, this flute, the name of which is pronounced the same as the word for "music" in Chinese, used to be an important instrument in many ancient ceremonial rituals. In The Book of Songs (Shi Jing), the most ancient collection of Chinese poetry, which was compiled in the 6th century BC, yue is the most frequently mentioned wind instrument. After the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) about 1,700 years ago,...
