Heya, gang.

A young friend of mine, Tora, is going through a very rough patch of life.
She lost her mother just over a year ago - after a protracted and horrid decline - and now her grandmother Wilna is in the hospital declining towards death.

The remainder of Tora's family is utterly disfuctional, and she does not have close relations with any of them, including her father.

In effect, Tora is about to be orphaned at the age of 22.

I have a dual prayer request:

For Miss Wilna: that she either recover and regain her interest in living, or -if indeed it is her time to go- that she recover lucidity long enough to say her farewells and then depart in peace.

For Tora: that she be given the strength to endure what is coming; that she understand that she does not stand alone and need never feel alone, that there are many outside her family who care for her and will give of themselves to help her through this; that she find peace and solace.

On a happier note, we are getting ready for next weeks big 4-H Youth Fair.
The Kid is entering several projects, and i thought I would share one.

Cyborg is getting this punted to her directly, because I KNOW she will like it. But it's for the rest of you guys, too.

MARGARET DOBB’S ALABAMA BLUEBERRY BREAD



3 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 TB ground cinnamon
2 cups sugar
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
3 eggs, well beaten
1 1/4 cup canola oil
2 pints of blueberries (Mash about one cup of these)
2 tsp lemon extract
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)


Preheat oven to 350’.

Grease two large loaf pans. Cut two large pieces of aluminum foil, and place them in the pans, with foil draping loosely over the sides. This is so the bread can be easily removed from the pans later without losing the sugary topping.

Mix 1/4 cup of sugar and half of the cinnamon. Set aside for the top of the bread later.

In a large bowl, put flour, salt, baking soda, sugar, cloves, nutmeg, and the remaining cinnamon. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients.

Pout eggs, oil and lemon extract into the well. Stir until dry ingredients are moistened. Stir in blueberries and nuts if you are using them. (If you are using frozen blueberries, make sure they are plain and not sugared) Divide the batter into the two pans, and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Bake for one hour, watching carefully that that topping does not burn.

Using the foil, lift the bread out of the pan. Let cool before eating. Keep refrigerated.
