This sounds like a combination of technologies application.

The plates could possibly be assembled as stacked components, and then the necessary vacuum spacing could be achieved by a chemical etching process similar to IC-chip manufacturing.

Another possible technique would concentrate on achieving an atomically smooth surface. Such a surface would need to be protected from contamination, and I don't know whether its attainment is a real necessity, but it seems that such smoothness would simplify the requisite close-spacing interval between plates.


I haven't heard, and do not know, whether there is an optical component to the operation of such devices, but my Science Fiction trained brain leads me in that direction. Something has to interface and control the power device without changing its geometry. That something could be an optical construct.

We may ultimately discover that these parallel plates are similar to the lines of force of a magnet, and that we are only now delving into the ramifications and possibilities of their uses.

I see a vague "parallel" with the sensible explanations of Superconductivity, that it occurs because of momentum reinforcement between paired electrons. The close spacing appears to affect the way in which electromagnetic fields, such as those associated with photons, can operate in a tight space. Rather like a wave-guide for light. (This brings up a question -- Are we getting all we can out of fiber optics?)

"These things run for as long as the distance between the plates holds up." -- This phrase applies to lead-acid car batteries, too. Point being, the loss of the ZPM may be due to oxidation or corrosion.

I propose using Iridium. I just like the sound of it.

We fine-tune our plans from time to time. Mid-course corrections, as it were.

NASA has made worse investments than to review these threads. Substitute Space Shuttle main fuel tanks for our "enclosures," pack them with the comforts of home, and lots of green growing things, and put in a small crew of from six to ten people, and you'd have a legitimate Mars mission.

Nothing will substitute for the Nuclear Rockets. NASA may as well shout that fact out loud right now.
