It must be part of what happened earlier.

So, what, exactly, DID happen "earlier"? I was out playing Mad Max in commute traffic and must have missed it.

Well, okay then!

I'll lay in a supply of rubber rods and cat-skins, so that we can develop our own static charge generators.

(We may want to hold off on dismantling those Van de Graaf generators, eh guys?)

Anyone know a good source for Leyden jars?

In the meantime, we'll continue with the Gas-Cooled Nuclear Reactor/Rocket Engines, and I'll see if we can't get some additional boost from the exhaust by using a linear induction magneto-dynamic coil stack around the exhaust aperture. Consider it a type of afterburner.

We'll need the GCNR/RE for power production anyway. Maybe I'll increase from 132 to 460 shuttle-thruster engine pairs, with the excess mounted directly on the thrust ring and on the habitation modules themselves.

I'll have to set up some additional Useful element harvesting apparati on the "longboat" pods, but I think the Eniwetokians will appreciate it in the long run.

A couple of days ago FR was completely down. I had heard that something had crashed, but I'm not sure what happened.

"Poblachd Saorsa," (in English, "Free Republic") the best whisky straight from The Official Distillery of the Undead ThreadTM?

This is more the mental picture that I had...

I'm not worried about the expense. I'm sure we can charge them.

FR must really have it in for me. I see you responded in 33765, but the latest I can see is 33762.

Ah. But the long necks of Poblachd Saorsa will give you better insulation/isolation.

It's happening to me too. But it seems to happen more on this longer thread than when I post on the shorter threads.

I recall seeing at Free Dominion that there was a server crash.

Leyden jars? They don't sound all that hard to make. Most of the substrata beneath the castle is your typical olivine with a could of good metal ore strains running through it. Nickel/Iron, copper, lead, even some more rare or exotic materials like titanium. Should be enough to whip up a few hundred jars if we need 'em.

I'm trying something that'll cross a Leyden, a Van de Graaf, and a cold fusion reactos. If you see lavender smoke pouring out of the forge later on... don't look back... just run.

12.5 million sq. ft.? Wow... That translates into enough space for roughly 25,000 inhabitants...

we are trying to avoid making a space-borne analogue of Calcutta, thankyooverrahmuch.

I think cold fusion has a lot more promise than press reports would indicate.

The confusion seems to stem from the fact, apparent to me, that cold fusion requires a combination of rare-earth metals, electrical discharges, Deuterium-Tritium mixtures, and perhaps even ultrasonic bubble collapses.

Something of a proper recipe will cause power to flow from the right combination of these ingredients. If my supposition is correct, it may be that fuel cell cars will eventually be supplanted by cold-fusion electrical generators, which should be perfectly safe to operate in vehicles, if normal fire precautions are taken.

I could easily get used to the task of re-fueling annually.

That's why I'm doing it here. Trying to get the static charge to amplify the reaction in the lithium tantalate. Somewhat similar to the sonofusion technique, but with piezoelectric crystals that have already got a low order fusion reaction going on.

It ain't getting things going that I'm worried about... it's shutting it down again later...

With 6031 acres, I don't think that'll be a problem.

I am guessing the problem is that they have multiple servers, each one serving up a full copy of Free Republic. The problem is that when you add a posting it gets added to the server you're on right away, then there's a delay while it gets passed arond to the other servers. In the meantime, when you re-load after you've posted you could wind up on a different server, one that hasn't received the post you just submitted.

Normally they seem to update quickly enough that there's no visible problem, but there are times like this when the updates are really, really slow.

I am also guessing that thread and posting numbers are being managed (handed out) from a "central authority" (machine), but not immediately passeed to the servers -- each server determines the latest number from the posting it has. This could easily lead to oddities such as "post 33768 of 33765."

(There is a small hole in this theory, though.)
