Five major ancient shipwrecks that carried amphorae and an anchor pole pointing to a large sea vessel are among the amazing finds found by archaeologists during underwater searches at the bottom of Levitha, a small island in the Aegean Sea, between Amorgos and Leros...
The shipwreck at Knidos had a trove including amphorae, dating back to the same period, while three more shipwrecks with cargoes of Cone or pseudo-Cone amphorae were found (2nd and 1st centuries BC) and the 2nd century AD), a shipwreck with amphorae cargo from the North Aegean of the 1st century BC, a shipwreck with cargo of amphorae of the 1st century BC. and finally, a shipwreck with amphorae dating back to the early Christian period.
Of particular interest is a granite anchor pole, lifted from a depth of 45 meters, weighing 400 kg. It is probably dated to the 6th century BC. and is the largest stone pillar of the Archaic period, which has been found to this day in the Aegean. It was most likely used by a colossal sized ship.
The discoveries are the fruits of the first mission of the underwater archaeological research overseen by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities on the island of Levitha, which took place from 15 to 29 June under the direction of archaeologist Dr. George Koutsouflakis.
The underwater archaeological research is being conducted over a three-year period (2019-2021), with the aim of identifying and documenting ancient shipwrecks in the coastal zone in the cluster of four isolated islands (Levitha, Mavria, Glaros and Chinaros), which appears to have played a key role in ancient and modern navigation.

I sometimes think of an old book "The Mad Scientists' Club", that was popular among Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, and geeks of course. There was an interesting observation somewhere in there (the chapter on their lighter-than-airship I think) where they were making their way at night by use of a pair of powerful flashlights, a compass, and two sets of binoculars. The compass and a flashlight and binocs stayed at the point of origin, the other flashlight and binocs went as far in the generally right direction as possible where each could see the other. Anyway, the summary idea was articulated in the form that otherwise, it's like trying to draw a mile long straight line with a one inch ruler.
Wow, that was the long way around.
It's analogous to our own brief lives and how our perspective is so tightly defined by our longevity. Or maybe I just need to drink some electrolytes and take a nap.

Levitha’s ancient name was Lebinthos. But I suppose everyone knows that. There are a number of place names in -nth- in the Aegean, including mainland Greece, and they are believed to be pre-Greek. When the Greek-speakers invaded they kept many of the names from the previous inhabitants (just like the English colonists in North America kept many American Indian names). Korinthos, Zakynthos, and Kynthos are examples.
So that’s what happened to my shipment of Falernian . . .
Wow...look at those. I’d love to discover some amphora filled with gold or silver.
And thousands of miles would require thousands of boy scouts because at a certain point they would not be able to see each other and would need another crew to go further and still see the one behind them.
And of course the crew two points back is worthless at that point as is every other crew behind them. They are the past.
We are like one of those crews and soon enough we will be out of view

Thanks! And yeah, the -nth (-nthos, nthus) endings on placenames are Carian in origin, and are found in other places around the Med as well, because the Carians were the drift known to the Greeks. Herodotus talks about Carians here and there throughout The HIstories.
