"Viking genetics and Viking ancestry is used quite a lot in extremist right-wing circles," says Cat Jarman at the University of Bristol in the UK, who wasn't involved in the study. Many white supremacists identify with a "very pure Viking race of just people from Scandinavia, who had no influence from anywhere else".

What would you expect with all of that raping and pillaging from Byzantium to Vinland?
My ancestry is Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Denmark so I should have some Viking in there somewhere. :-)
Notice the celebrity nitwit fake scientist goes "woke" on it, even though she had nothing to do with the study. Partisan media shills suck everywhere.
Yeah, they spread their own DNA around that way. :^) There has been a recent-years attempt to paint the Vikings as misunderstood bringers of culture. :^)
The Vikings took over swaths of Ireland, Scotland -- they were the first apparent settlers on some of those islands -- and England. If you get your DNA 'done', you can anticipate perhaps 35 percent Scando. Having Danish ancestry will really pile in more. :^)

“My ancestry is Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Denmark so I should have some Viking in there somewhere. :-)” You probably have a lot of Scandinavian blood. The Vikings raided the British Isles for hundreds of years then many decided to stay. They were absorbed into the population bringing their DNA with them. They were also in western Europe and that would include France. When the Norman Conquest came in 1066 the French brought some Viking DNA with them as well.
Then there were the Normans, who were Vikings who settled in northern France, intermarried with the French women, and later invaded England and became the British aristocracy.
They also set up colonies in Sicily and elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
Don't forget about the Vikings' rich and diverse cultural exchange program... AKA slavery.
My ancestors were vikings. Feared throughout the land. Conquerors wherever they went. The baddest of the bad.
And yet I ended up as an uneducated white deplorable.
Well, that sucks.
Viking genetics and Viking ancestry is used quite a lot in extremist right-wing circles...
News to me.
Or is it fake news?
I tried to find another source and they all come back to the new scientist article. I understand making a buck, but it’s too bad that they don’t allow access to articles like this after a few months since it is from July. 95% or more of those who might be interested in this will never read it. That is a 95% reduction in needed exposure for this author and his work. It hinders rather than helps his career overall. It is stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime in the long run.
Another one of those increasingly common "every knows it" citations by liberals with no attribution. Why bother getting comments on record when we all know how "those people" think?
Yes, me too.
The purpose of the article is NOT about the genetic diversity of the Vikings. That fact is the tool the article uses to make a dig at “right wing extremists”, whom now apparently are not enamored with Germanic ancestry but Viking ancestry. Rubbish.
It is so very ignorant to believe these travelers didn’t grow the family tree and spread seeds everywhere.
Looks like today’s Scandahoovian countries could use an infusion of Viking DNA.
