It’s the Brits doing that. They know that they have a lot of Viking ancestry so they want to make them out to be peaceful. Add to that the rampant anti-Christianism of the elites (many of the extant written records of Viking raids were made by monks) and they have further motive to discredit the evidence.
I didn’t know they were trying to paint the Vikings as peaceful until I went to England a few years back. The only paper I’d read about the Vikings was about Orkney Island. Three Pict bodies (man,woman,child) were found in a trash midden in a destruction layer. Before the layer were Pict artifacts. After the layer were only Viking ones. Seems obvious to me what went on.
