Anyone old enough to remember using Windows 98 when it was still current can attest to the fact that it was a really fantastic operating system. It made big improvements over Windows 95 in almost every area that mattered, and at the time it actually looked extremely sleek and clean. Today, of course, it’s absolutely ancient, but one brave man took it upon himself to see if it’s still possible to use a Windows 98 system as your primary computer today, and the results are actually quite astounding.

For the first time in ages, I am refurbing an arcade machine. I have done nine of them, but it has been a while. Anyway, I use an old Win98 PC to emulate arcade games in the old case, and I have forgotten if this can be done...I am trying to idiot proof the machine so after I get it set up, people won't be messing with the OS. I would like to remove the My Computer and Recycle Bin icons from the desktop in Win98. Worst case, I could edit a blank Icon and rename them with blanks, but...

Recent statistics released by W3Counter reveal that the market share of Windows 98 fell from 1.44 percent to 1.34 percent in August, reducing it to the same level of popularity as the open source Linux operating system, which saw its market share increase from 1.33 to 1.34 in the same period. If the steady downward trend in Windows 98's market share continues, the popularity of Linux will soon surpass that of Microsoft's outdated, nine-year-old Windows version.

The systems affected are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Millennium Edition. There are two new Windows 98 security updates available. You can find them at this address (direct Link to Microsoft website). They are quick updates and do not require you to start your computer. If you are using Windows 98, best to get them. Also, if you are using the old version of Ad Aware by Lavasoft, you should get the second edition. It picks up a whole lot of spyware the first edition does not catch and even updates on first edition will not do it.

A service pack for Windows 98 Second Edition has been released. Big deal, right? It is if it doesn't come from Microsoft. Last Friday, Windows enthusiast Alper Coskun posted something he dubbed "Service Pack 1.5" for Windows 98 SE on his Web site. Although clearly labeled as "Unofficial," the Service Pack uses updates and hot fixes Coskun collected from the Windows Update service site and Microsoft's Knowledge Base database. The service pack includes 70 hot fixes, a solution to the 512MB memory limit of Windows 98 SE, and better USB support, claimed Coskun on his Web site. The self-extracting, self-installing...

The Blaster worm, which continues to create chaos by crashing numerous vulnerable Windows machines across the Net, has changed the rules on malicious code attacks. Unlike Slammer or Nimda, home users have borne the brunt of the attack - although businesses of all sizes have also suffered. Blaster shatters the partially reassuring notion that email-borne nasties are the most significant threat for Harry Homeowner. Now updating patches and using perimeter security, always good ideas, have become prerequisites for Windows users. With the appearance of new variants of Blaster already appearing on the Net, its worth reviewing the nature of Blaster,...

Hi all; I have the opportunity to purchase a Windows 98 Second Edition FULL version install CD, not the Upgrade version. (I'm not upgrading to XP or 2000 just yet because they're incompatible with too many of my peripherals.) My question: Will the full Win 98 SE CD wipe out my existing software installed with Windows 98 (E-mail client, network settings, etc.)? Or will it just upgrade Win 98, leaving the existing applications alone?
