(techie vanity) Windows update question: Will Full Win 98 SE install wipe out old 98 settings?

Posted on 04/04/2003 11:18:15 AM PST by martin_fierro

Hi all;

I have the opportunity to purchase a Windows 98 Second Edition FULL version install CD, not the Upgrade version.

(I'm not upgrading to XP or 2000 just yet because they're incompatible with too many of my peripherals.)

My question: Will the full Win 98 SE CD wipe out my existing software installed with Windows 98 (E-mail client, network settings, etc.)? Or will it just upgrade Win 98, leaving the existing applications alone?

Thanks for your assistance.

Look here http://www.microsoft.com/Windows98/usingwindows/setuptips.asp to see if it will answer your questions. I will keep looking, and maybe leave you more links to check out.

You can keep your current settings

If you want to preserve your current Windows 95 settings when you upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition, run the Windows 98 Second Edition setup program while running Windows 95, and install to the same Windows directory on your hard drive.

Sounds like the answer I was looking for. THANKS!

I bought the full retail version of Win 98 SE and installed it over Win 98.

It doesn't seem to affect the previously-installed affiliated software at all. Turned out great!

You must have some really old or unique peripherals...do you know if any of them have Windows NT4 drivers available? My experience has been that NT4 drivers will work under Win2k most of the time.
