Excerpt -

Microsoft again warned today that customers face security risks if they use some of its ageing operating systems after it ends support for them next month.

The systems affected are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Millennium Edition. Support will end on 11 July, the next date for Microsoft's monthly security patches and software updates.

Security updates will also end, a posting on the Microsoft Security Response Center said.

To cut off the Microsoft bashing... Win98 is over 8 years old. WinME (which was never any good anyway, and probably why Win98 wasn't EOL'd before) is over 6 years old. It's a reasonable end-of-life time for either/both.

Or, in this case, you can spend an order of magnitude less money and upgrade to WinXP.

Unsolicited advice is worth exactly the price paid for it.

I do wish, however, that they'd include an option with new operating systems to make the user interface look virtually identical to the old one. I'm the help desk for my 83 year old father, whose first experience with a computer was when I bought him a WindowsMe-loaded one when he was 78. I do not relish the thought of switching his computer to a newer operating system . . .

WinXP does have the option of looking darn close to Windows 98SE. It's under Display Properties>Appearance>Windows and buttons. Choose "Windows Classic style" and you're all set.

So how'd the author write this article?

Set the control panel display to - Display Properties: Themes: Windows Classic

I've never actually compared it functionally to WinMe, but it does look pretty much the same.

Can someone explain to me how you would face security risks after MS ends the support? How would there be anymore security risks than before they ended support?

It's about time. Microsoft has actually been generous in supporting these ancient operating systems for so long.

We bought an Apple ipod last December, has already been to the shop for unexplained loss of all songs on ipod. Repair center says they can't find anything wrong, sends it back. It still loses tunes, shuts down for no apparent reason and is basically a pos.

Oh, no! That's awful! Why would Microsoft want to kill you off?

Aside from the fact that 9x is wide-open to attack anyway, it means no more security fixes.

OK, so anymore new viruses and whatever wouldn't be fixed. Thanks for the explanation.

BTW, Microsoft was considering building their PDA version of Windows on the Millenial Edition kernel...

...until it started getting called "Mini-ME." :)

New computer. Hubby is running an 8 year old system! Maybe now he will let me upgrade it for him!

You can spend ~$500-700 on a new Dell with WinXP and it will compute circles around any 8 year old machine. Or shop around, I'm not recommending Dell per say, I'm just familiar with their price structure.
