There is a powerful scene in the 1994 movie Disclosure, about sexual harassment in the workplace, which ably captures the zeitgeist behind the wave of historic monument destruction we are witnessing around the country by ignorant young nihilists today. In the movie, Michael Douglas plays a Silicon Valley tech executive who is being sexually harassed by an aggressive female colleague played by Demi Moore. When he spurns her affections, Moore's seductress launches a corporate jihad against Douglas' hapless character to try to destroy the man, his reputation and his soon-to-be fortune that will result from his firm's forthcoming IPO. In...

On August 8th, 1885, New York City hosted the longest funeral procession in history for General U.S. Grant. Grant had died two weeks earlier at Grant Cottage near Saratoga Springs, NY after completing his memoirs. The photos are mostly from a rare commemorative book published shortly after the funeral. This video has been produced by Tim Welch from scans of photographs shot by the U.S. Instant Photographic Company of Boston. (appx 20 mins)

With passage of the Third Force Act, popularly known as the Ku Klux Act, Congress authorizes President Ulysses S. Grant to declare martial law, impose heavy penalties against terrorist organizations, and use military force to suppress the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). ---SNIP--- the KKK engaged in terrorist raids against African-Americans and white Republicans at night, employing intimidation, destruction of property, assault, and murder to achieve its aims and influence upcoming elections. In a few Southern states, Republicans organized militia units to break up the Klan.

The Anthony trial of 1873 helped answer the important question of whether women as "citizens" under the recently adopted Fourteenth Amendment were entitled, as one of the "privileges and immunities" that came with citizenship, to vote. The answer given by prim and conservative Justice Ward Hunt will surprise few, but the trial also shows Hunt with his hands full, not quite knowing how to shut up his feisty defendant. Read now about what "Aunt Susan" described in her diary as "the greatest outrage in judicial history!"

It is extremely rare that I post vanities. I average about one article a year so I hope no one takes offense in this. Every so often the question of how history will treat our current president appears. Most generally agree that Phistory will not be kind to President George W. Bush and his foreign policies. The more optimistic people believe that it will take around 20-50 years before our current president receives the proper credit his visionary policies, strength of will and conviction are due. I believe that the 20-50 year prediction may be a bit optimistic, and if...

Who's buried in Grant's Tomb? PAUL POST, The Saratogian 05/26/2006 NEW YORK -- At a Civil War battlefield, Grant's Tomb might be one of America's most imposing memorials. In New York, overshadowed by world-famous structures such as the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and St. Patrick's Cathedral, it's just another building. But visitors can't help coming away impressed after seeing the 150-foot-tall monument overlooking the Hudson River, where Grant was laid to rest following his July 23, 1885 death at Wilton's Mount McGregor. 'I grew up here in New York, so to me this isn't a 'wow' building,'...

case of mercy versus justiceBy Paul PratherHERALD-LEADER CONTRIBUTING COLUMNIST The Jewish prophet Micah said this: "And what does the lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." That statement seems as pertinent today, and as complicated, as it must have sounded several thousand years ago. We're at war with terrorists who intend to destroy us. We deal daily with less dangerous, but infuriating, annoyances: self- serving politicians, crooked business partners, drug users, crabby spouses. Meanwhile, God requires us to demonstrate justice, mercy and humility -- all at the same time....

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - An organizer of a planned memorial to honor Confederate soldiers who died at an Illinois prison camp says the rebel flag will be displayed at the memorial's dedication, despite opposition. "We consider this an honorable flag. This is a soldier's flag," said Ron Casteel, national chief of staff for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, one of the memorial's planners. "There will be no substitute." Camp Butler, just east of Springfield, was a training facility for Union troops during the Civil War and a prison camp for more than 3,500 captured Confederates. More than 800 of the prisoners...

Q: After having read many accounts of the Civil War, I still don’t understand why South Carolina fired on Ft. Sumter, galvanizing the North into war. What do you think might have happened had the South continued to let these coastal forts be manned by the Union for a longer time? Hanson: I think conflict was inevitable, because the South had little appreciation of Northern industrial power nor of the competence of a number of formerly nondescript Union officers. The best officers of the Mexican War had joined the Confederacy and there was an erroneous general impression that all superior...

DIXON, Ill. (AP) Ronald Reagan's death has drawn a steady stream of cars down the rural highways leading to Dixon, Tampico and Eureka, the often forgotten small towns where the only Illinois-born president grew up playing football and dreaming of Hollywood. Five times the usual number of tourists have crossed the porch of Reagan's boyhood home in Dixon daily since his death. Hundreds of others have discovered the Reagan collection at Eureka College, where he graduated in 1932. ``Whenever anyone passes away, it's a time of reflection. I think people want to touch and feel and have a connection,'' said...

I was reading throuhg US Grant's memoirs and came across this remarkable paragraph on page 95: "After the war, during the summer of 1865, I travelled considerably through the North, and was everywhere met by large numbers of people. Every one had his opinion about the manner in which the war had been conducted: who among the generals had failed, how, and why. Correspondents of the press were ever on hand to hear every word dropped, and were not always disposed to report correctly what did not confirm their preconceived notions, either about the conduct of the war or the...

An honor guard from the Sons of Confederate Veterans marches during a memorial service for Gen. Alfred Mouton before the Battle of Mansfield re-enactment. Mouton was the highest ranking confederate soldier killed at the Battle of Mansfield, which was fought on April 8, 1864.The Battle of Mansfield in April 1864 was the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War, one of the largest battles west of the Mississippi River and marked the sour end of a campaign personally planned by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Still, historians have mixed ideas over its place in the grand scheme of that conflict.

In 1862, in the heat of the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant initiated one of the most blatant official episodes of anti-Semitism in 19th-century American history. In December of that year, Grant issued his infamous General Order No. 11, which expelled all Jews from Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi: The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from the department [the "Department of the Tennessee," an administrative district of the Union Army of occupation composed of Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi] within twenty-four hours from the receipt...

Dear Lord, There's a young man far from home, called to serve his nation in time of war; sent to defend our freedom on some distant foreign shore. We pray You keep him safe, we pray You keep him strong, we pray You send him safely home ... for he's been away so long. There's a young woman far from home, serving her nation with pride. Her step is strong, her step is sure, there is courage in every stride. We pray You keep her safe, we pray You keep her strong, we pray You send her safely home...
