After days of speculation that a bilateral North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) had been reached between the United States and Mexico, the Mexican president-elect insisted on bringing Canada into the deal. On Monday, Mexico and the U.S. announced a deal to change the 25-year old trade pact, with Canada pressured to sign on by Friday. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who will take office on Dec. 1, made the comments during his speech before an event in the Mexican state of Chiapas. He said it was important that Canada was part of the deal.

The Mexican secretary of foreign affairs on Tuesday pushed back after President Trump repeated his assertion that Mexico would pay for a wall along the border between the two countries. "We just reached a trade understanding with the US, and the outlook for the relationship between our two countries is very positive," Luis Videgaray tweeted. "We will NEVER pay for a wall, however," he added. "That has been absolutely clear from the very beginning." Videgaray's tweet came in response to comments Trump made during a meeting with FIFA and U.S. Soccer officials about the 2026 men's World Cup. Shortly after...

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks posted strong gains on Monday, with the benchmark S&P 500 and the Nasdaq hitting all-time highs, as news that the United States and Mexico were closing in on a trade deal added to optimism about the economy. A Mexican source familiar with the talks told Reuters “it’s almost certain” that there will be an announcement about the North American Free Trade Agreement later in the day and U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted, “a big deal looking good with Mexico!” Also helping sentiment was Washington pressing the European Union to speed up trade negotiations. Nine of the...

President Trump said Sunday that he is “not happy” with the revised NAFTA deal that his administration has been hammering out with Canada and Mexico and that he doesn't want to sign any new agreement until after the midterm elections in November. The remarks were aired on Fox News's “Sunday Morning Futures” on a critical day in the U.S. relationship with its neighbors as Canada started collecting tariffs on $12.6 billion worth of U.S. products to hit back at Trump and Mexican voters went to the polls to pick a new president, who will play a key role in shaping...

WASHINGTON—Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz warned Tuesday that the United States would face “massive economic costs” if President Donald Trump killed the North American Free Trade Agreement — but that Trump might go ahead and make that decision. Cruz said “NAFTA has created millions of jobs across the United States,” and he said “Texans believe in international trade.” He expressed concern that Trump, whom he generally supports, would seek to use the ongoing NAFTA renegotiation to reduce trade and erect protectionist barriers rather than to expand trade. Reducing access to the Canadian and Mexican markets, Cruz said, would “do profound...

The personal appeal that President Trump said he received from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month — leading him to renegotiate NAFTA — was only made after Trump’s son-in-law and top aide Jared Kushner called Trudeau’s office in Ottawa and begged him to talk some sense into the commander-in-chief, a report says. The unconventional move was revealed Monday by the National Post, who spoke to several government sources familiar with the desperate pleas from Washington. Toronto’s Metro newspaper later revealed that Kushner was the government official who made the phone call.

President Trump and the leaders of Mexico and Canada agreed Wednesday to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the White House said Wednesday night. "it is my privilege to bring NAFTA up to date through renegotiation," Trump said in a statement. "It is an honor to deal with both [Mexican] President [Enrique] Peña Nieto and [Canadian] Prime Minister [Justin] Trudeau, and I believe that the end result will make all three countries stronger and better." The White House added that Trump "agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time" and that all three leaders ""agreed to proceed swiftly,...
