Mexico's foreign affairs secretary pushes back against Trump: "We will never pay for a wall"

The Mexican secretary of foreign affairs on Tuesday pushed back after President Trump repeated his assertion that Mexico would pay for a wall along the border between the two countries.

"We just reached a trade understanding with the US, and the outlook for the relationship between our two countries is very positive," Luis Videgaray tweeted.

"We will NEVER pay for a wall, however," he added. "That has been absolutely clear from the very beginning."

Videgaray's tweet came in response to comments Trump made during a meeting with FIFA and U.S. Soccer officials about the 2026 men's World Cup.

Shortly after praising a joint bid from the U.S., Mexico and Canada to host the tournament as a "great partnership," Trump was asked about Mexico paying for his border wall.

"The wall will be paid for very easily by Mexico. It will ultimately be paid for by Mexico," Trump told reporters.

Trump has claimed since the time he campaigned for president that he would oversee construction of a wall on the U.S. southern border that would be paid for by Mexico. Late last month, Trump threatened to shutdown the government if he did not receive adequate funding from the U.S. Congress for the structure.

Mexican officials have insisted repeatedly that they will not fund Trump's wall.

The president's latest revival of calls for Mexico to pay come a day after he announced a breakthrough in trade negotiations with Mexico amid contentious talks on revamping the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The deal, which Trump said he plans to call the "United States-Mexico Trade Agreement," would require 75 percent of auto content to be made in U.S. and Mexico, up from 62.5 percent, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced.

The deal also would require that 40-45 percent of auto content be made by workers earning at least $16 per hour.

Canada is not included in the initial framework of a deal. Trump said Canada could become part of a three-nation deal if they negotiate "fairly," while Mexican officials said they look forward to seeing Canada join the agreement.

Touchy, ain't he.

But ya know, we wouldn't NEED a wall if Mexico provided Mexicans with better living and working conditions.

Funny how Mexicans are desperate to get out of Mexico.

Tax remittances at 5% and they’ll pay for it.

He doesn’t seem to grasp this, as many libs didn’t grasp it.

Mexico IS GOING TO PAY.

That wasn’t a request. That wasn’t a proposal. It’s coming from the money that mexicans in the US send back to Mexico.

This isn’t something that he has to agree to.

The deal also would require that 40-45 percent of auto content be made by workers earning at least $16 per hour.

Not sure how that can be measured and monitored.

Exactly. Don’t make it large. Just make it enough to pay for the wall over time.

Add the welfare we pay for illegals - food, housing, medicine, schools and prisons - to the tax on remittances and there won’t be much remittance left will there?

If this agreement reduces the imbalance of trade the US has with Mexico the wall is already paid for.

If USA puts a tax on money being sent home to Mexico, Mexicans will willy nilly pay for the wall.

To: yesthatjallen; All

First of all, we need to send ALL whining, crying, complaining America-Hating Socialists to Mexico. One way ticket. See ya! We’ll even let you live in a beautiful Costal town! Take all of your American Dollars with you; no questions asked. Just. Get. OUT!

Secondly, ICE needs to set up a table at EVERY Walmart across America to monitor all the ill-gotten CASH that’s being wired home each month. I live in a Cow Town of 283 people - our nearest ‘city’ has a population of about 2K and the Super Duper Walmart is MORE than happy to help you wire money anywhere in the world.

(I hear that Hillary is currently funneling untold Millions through her local Walmart. *SMIRK*)

Yearly? It’s BILLIONS leaving OUR coffers! Enough! MAGA!

We know how prideful those people are. No problem. We’ll make them pay for the wall without them even knowing they are paying for the wall.
