Trump Agrees to Renegotiate NAFTA with Canada, Mexico Leaders (More Winning)
Fox News ^ | 4/26/2017 | John Roberts

President Trump and the leaders of Mexico and Canada agreed Wednesday to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the White House said Wednesday night.

"it is my privilege to bring NAFTA up to date through renegotiation," Trump said in a statement. "It is an honor to deal with both [Mexican] President [Enrique] Peña Nieto and [Canadian] Prime Minister [Justin] Trudeau, and I believe that the end result will make all three countries stronger and better."

The White House added that Trump "agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time" and that all three leaders ""agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the renegotiation" of the trade deal to "the benefit of all three countries." Trump repeatedly railed against the two-decade-old trade agreement on the campaign trail, describing it repeatedly as a "disaster."

Earlier Wednesday, sources told Fox News that the White House had drafted a notification signaling the United States' intention to withdraw from NAFTA. The document would have given the leaders of Canada and Mexico six months' notice of the administration's decision to exit from the agreement.

More winning. I guess the threat of pulling out all together got Mexico and Canada scrambling. I'm sure "funding" the border wall will be discussed with Mexico at this time too.

Well, President Trump always said he (or his people) know exactly how to negotiate so that we come out on top.

Plenty of experience there so I’m sure he will.

Seem to remember reading (earlier today) that a federal judge has ruled this is unconstitutional and NAFTA can in no way ‘be tinkered with’ (paraphrasing here)

DJT= MAGA
Despite the communist judges we have in AMERICA!
These scum buckets are the lowest living creatures on earth.
They make the black plague appear to be a blessing.

Time will tell. An improvement seems easy, given our poor currdnt status.

It’s an “agreement” not a treaty and can be scrapped on a whim.

Thanks for including us in the shithole (canada) reference.

I have been against NAFTA since it was first mentioned.

I am against all free trade agreements. Let everyone buy and sell where they want and who they want to. Canada will survive, adapt or sink.

I was very upset to find that my province is selling Hydro power to the states at less than I pay myself, as a Canadian. Everyone just pay world price and can afford it or do without.

Say what one will, but... Ross was right.

There WAS a "giant sucking sound" of American jobs going south!

But don’t tell Rush. He still loves the US Chamber of Commerce propaganda he was swallowing back when he was proud of being praised by Clinton and Gore for supporting NAFTA

President Trump: I don’t give a damn! We are going to keep on winning. Because we are going to MAGA! We need to win more!!!

Why don’t we just annex Canada, build the wall with Mexico, and be happy?

Ross called it. NAFTA was a complete disaster from the start: any trade agreement that includes uniform rules for countries with economies as different as Canada & Mexico is doomed to fail, because it can’t account for market asymmetries.

All it did was cost jobs, jobs, and more jobs.

On a net basis, Canada purchases more goods from the U.S. than any other nation and many American jobs are supported by our mutual trade alliance

China — $579 billion traded with a $347 billion deficit.
Canada — $545 billion traded with a $11 billion deficit.
Mexico — $525 billion traded with a $63 billion deficit.
Japan — $196 billion traded with a $69 billion deficit.
Germany — $164 billion traded with a $65 billion deficit.

....Calling Canada a shithole and crowing because Trump slapped “little brother” upside the head means little. Many of the jobs involved are in the states that flipped to Trump in the last election...

I disagree with you (and Ross Perot) completely. NAFTA isn't perfect, but its biggest impact isn't even recognized by most people.

NAFTA ended the practice of nationalizing entire industries -- particularly in the energy sector. This used to be common practice even in a modern country like Canada, where energy production stagnated for years because producers were forced to sell to Canadian customers at discounted prices.

It's no coincidence that Canada and Mexico both surpassed Saudi Arabia as the largest foreign sources of oil for the U.S. just a few years after NAFTA was adopted.
