Mayor blames 'gangs' for Paris high school night of violence 4 days ago PARIS (AFP) — Paris Mayor Bernard Delanoe blamed "organised gangs" on Saturday for clashes overnight near the Eiffel Tower between police and high school students celebrating the end of their final exams. Twenty-nine people were arrested, and 22 kept in custody, after the unrest in the Champ de Mars park in the well-to-do Seventh District that pitted police firing tear gas against "250 to 300 youths". About a dozen neighbourhood shops were damaged, and two police officers slightly injured, said Alain Gardere, who is in charge of...

Remember all those dirty hippies who threatened to move to Canada if Bush was re-elected? Guess what, Canada doesn't want them either.... Peace activists Medea Benjamin and Ann Wright have been arrested in the U.S. while protesting the Iraq war, but they never dreamed that would prevent them from entering Canada. The arrests landed Benjamin's and Wright's names in an FBI-run database, the National Crime Information Center, which Canada also relies on to screen visitors. When the two women visited the country in August, they were told they would have to apply for "criminal rehabilitation" and pay $200 if they...

"Plans to shut down the senior part of Hermodsdal school in Malmö have prompted the Liberals to request an extra parliamentary debate on the problem of discipline in Swedish schools. "In Malmö a gang of troublemakers has dictated the decision. It's unacceptable," said the Liberal Party's Jan Björklund. The proposal to close the high school with 200 students, which was put forward during the Easter break, was due to "lack of security, vandalism and poor study results". The school has been vandalised several times and in January part of it was damaged in an arson attack." ... "It's the first...

NEW YORK (AP) - Federal agents and city police are keeping tabs on people they say might try to cause trouble at the Republican National Convention, questioning activists, making unannounced visits and monitoring Web sites and meetings. The law enforcement effort has been going on quietly, overshadowed in public by talk of counterterrorism measures planned for the Aug. 30-Sept. 2 event. "We're not engaging in surveillance of groups or individuals without legal predication," said Jim Margolin, spokesman for the New York office of the FBI. Ann Roman, a spokeswoman for the Secret Service, said agents expect to respond to an...

In ever increasing numbers, gun owners in this country have, by their actions, said to government: You are my master, all rights flow from you, I bow down before you and will beg, no, even pay for your permission to have my firearms. I have watched this occur here in my home state of New Mexico since January of this year, although it has been happening in many other states over the past decade or so.Let me draw an analogy for you, if I may. Let’s say robbers beset your town. They are becoming more and more brazen in...
