I am looking for help from someone who has access to the September-October 2012 edition of Sports Afield magazine. It is the 125th Anniversary edition. I am looking to confirm a quote from BYU professor Tom Smith. It is probably in the "Hunt Safely in Grizzly Country" article, but I do not have a page number. The quote is:  "If I'm actually out hunting and I have a gun in my hands a suddenly a bear comes at me--do you think I'm going to lay the gun down and pick up bear spray? Are you out of your mind?"...
  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? - The Pennsylvania Senate race is too close to call

Plumcreek Township, Pa. Last year, Tom Smith looked at the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania with dismay. The incumbent, first-term Democrat Bob Casey Jr., seemed vulnerable. The son of a well-liked, pro-life former Democratic governor, Casey had served in the Senate for six undistinguished and forgettable years. His vote for Obama-care, with its mandates and subsidies for abortion, was a blemish on his supposedly pro-life record. With a good message and enough money, a solid Republican candidate might knock off Casey by courting Reagan Democrats across the state. It had been done two years before, when conservative Republican Pat Toomey...

The U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania is now essentially a tie. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the Keystone State finds incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey, Jr. with 46% of the vote, while Republican Tom Smith attracts 45%. Nine percent (9%) are still undecided.

If you’re Senator Bob Casey Jr. of Pennsylvania, an embattled incumbent with a shrinking lead over a little-known opponent, you generally don’t want the former governor of your state, Ed Rendell, and your chief media consultant, Saul Shorr, getting into a public spat. You really don’t want that former governor griping to the press that you “haven’t run a campaign” and that you’ve run only “one ad, a stupid tea-party ad.” You don’t want your own staffer — Shorr — in turn accusing Rendell of “ignorance” and of being “the governor of Philadelphia.” Things may be going wrong for Senator...

The Keystone State Hasn't Backed a GOP Presidential Candidate Since '88, but as Obama's Lead Narrows, Romney's Camp Eyes It. Pennsylvania has emerged as an appealing target for Mitt Romney and the Republican Party as they consider where to invest their considerable resources during the final weeks of the presidential campaign. A quick visit to a Pittsburgh suburb on Saturday by Mr. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, suggested that Republicans are eyeing the state—or else trying to keep their opposition guessing.

Not only does the Rasmussen Daily Tracking poll show Romney up 2 points today; not only does the Rasmussen Swing State poll show Romney up 49-46 today (included are 11 states which Obama won 53-46 in 2008); not only is Romney up by 50-37 among swing state independents; NOW Susquehanna Polling and Research (SPR) shows Mitt Romney up 49-45 in the normally deep blue state of Pennsylvania. (1) SPR is an automated poll of 1,376 likely voters, taken between October 11-13. Although its results do not include the 2nd presidential debate, Gallup incorporates over 50% of the post-debate days in...

For months, Pennsylvania was considered a cakewalk for Democrats, with Sen. Bob Casey easily cruising to reelection and its 20 electoral votes in the bag for President Barack Obama. But enter Republican Tom Smith and his personal fortune, and suddenly the Keystone State has the potential of upending the national political landscape. Buoyed by a tightening presidential race here, Smith — a no-name GOP Senate candidate and self-funding multi-millionaire — has suddenly made Republicans bullish about picking off the Keystone State to make Mitch McConnell majority leader and Mitt Romney more competitive here. “He wasn’t on any endangered list,” Rep....

During the lead up to the Senate vote on Obamacare all eyes were on a few rare Democrats who Pro-Lifers hoped would stand up against the Democrats’ culture of death and vote NO because of the sections mandating faith based hospitals to commit abortions. Pennsylvania Democrat Senator and putative Catholic Bob Casey was one of those quislings who talked a good game about being as pro-life but ultimately became the 60th and decisive vote to pass Obamacare. By doing this Casey forced his Church, the Roman Catholic Church, to face either closing its hospitals or knuckling under and committing abortions....

Armstrong County coal entrepreneur Tom Smith broke away from a crowded field of contenders on Tuesday to win the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate and the opportunity to take on incumbent Sen. Bob Casey Jr. Smith, 64, of Plumcreek won 42 percent of the vote with 65 percent of precincts reporting, preliminary results showed. "This election will be about Sen. Casey's record. In his six years in the Senate, Casey has been President Obama's most trusted ally in massively expanding government, ballooning the debt and eroding our freedoms," Smith said. "A half-million unemployed Pennsylvanians deserve a senator with the real...

The poll shows Smith at 35 percent, leading former state Rep. Sam Rohrer, who registers 16 percent in the poll. Businessman Steve Welch, who was endorsed by Gov. Tom Corbett and the state Republican Party is at just ten percent in the survey. Thirty-one percent remain undecided and two minor candidates register single-digit percentage support. Smith -- who has infused his campaign with millions of dollars in personal money and is outspending the competition -- led Rohrer 29 percent to 14 percent in the previous internal poll his campaign released. That survey was conducted from April 9-11. The primary election...
