Why Tom Smith’s campaign is a sign of trouble for Obama in Pennsylvania

During the lead up to the Senate vote on Obamacare all eyes were on a few rare Democrats who Pro-Lifers hoped would stand up against the Democrats’ culture of death and vote NO because of the sections mandating faith based hospitals to commit abortions.

Pennsylvania Democrat Senator and putative Catholic Bob Casey was one of those quislings who talked a good game about being as pro-life but ultimately became the 60th and decisive vote to pass Obamacare.

By doing this Casey forced his Church, the Roman Catholic Church, to face either closing its hospitals or knuckling under and committing abortions.

In 2006 Casey had cruised to a smashing 18 point victory over a genuine pro-life lion and fellow Catholic Rick Santorum a two term Republican incumbent. In a victory that large there are always a number of reasons to point to but Casey’s standing as his father Bob Casey senior’s son (a popular pro-lifer) was a large factor in his win.

Pro-life Pennsylvanians voted for Casey “secure” in the belief that they could vote for him without losing a fighter their cause.

Now six years later Bob Casey has a 44% pro-life rating and he will be called to account for what he has done.

Enter Tom Smith his Republican challenger.

Democrat skewed polls aside a new survey of likely voters has Smith trailing Casey by just 49/42 justb outside the MoE. Smith has improved on Santorum’s margin by 11 points.

Why?

At 53% the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has the second highest percentage of Catholics in the nation. The Catholic Church is in an all-out battle with Barack Obama over Obamacare’s abortion mandate.

Both of these factors will join with Obama’s war on coal and the photo ID to vote law…

Given all the data in the just released Battleground poll Obama really doesn't have much of a chance in Pennsylvania regardless of the phony polls.

Really? I had not heard of this. A link? Can Romney overcome the heavily Democratic Philly area?

As long as Philly exists, Obama has Pennsylvania in the bag. I mean, do you have any idea how many car trunks full of votes that will be found after election day Obama can rely upon? Inifinity and beyond!!!!

Exactly. It'd be great if PA could be more contestable, but it simply isn't If internal polling said otherwise, Romney would be bombarding that state with advertising. He knows better. Ditto for Michigan.

Former PA gov. fast Eddie Rendell said if Voter ID is implemented, it would cost them 100,000 votes. he didnt say if they were dead voters or just repeaters.

I was told by another FReeper a short while ago, that the PA voter ID Law was struck down. Can you shed some light on this? Thanks.

Not "struck down" per se but it was a really strange ruling. Initially the trial court had upheld it. This verdict was appealed to the state Supreme Court which sent it back to the lower court, ordering it to take "a very very close look at it and verify that not a single eligible person would be denied their right to vote under the law" or something similar. Basically ordering the trial judge to re-examine and overturn himself if he could not ensure that the law was 110% bulletproof. Never happened here before to my recollection.

Well, I am going to call this one propoganda, just as the crap for obama is Propoganda.

People didn’t vote against Santorum because they felt Casey was a safe vote on the life issue... They voted against Santorum because he was horrible! You don’t lose by 17 or 18 points because you are good politician, I know that’s hard for some folks here to accept, but believe me Santorum is far more popular outside PA than he is inside PA because frankly we know him a hell of a lot better and don’t fall for his say one thing do another BS.

He’s conservative on social issues, but does believe the government should be involved in all sorts of things it really has no business in.

Tom Smith should poll far ahead of Santorum, hell Mickey Mouse would poll far ahead of Santorum.

This entire article is spin, while I am pro life, there is a whole lot being written into this article that just isn’t true.

Car trunks full of morons more like. Got talking to an alleged Viet Nam vet in the CVS at 10th and Reid and the dude was a pathetic stereotype of the loser bitching about Romney and the rich and figuring out how to get his his freebies. Finally had enough and said that I preferred to have a Communist black nationalist as President myself. He just kept talking. Check drawers in Philly ain't having none of their checks being stopped.

Thanks very much. Very encouraging news. I would think if Romney captures PA, it will seal his victory, and start a landslide.

PA has a solid chance of winning.... between coal layoffs, liberals trying to stop shale drilling, high retiree rate in PA and older folks scared of Obamacare, the Catholic vote, voter ID, his illegal amnesty, skyrocketing gas pump prices, the economy destroying small businesses like crazy in our rural towns... The Dems also have 200,000 less registered voters in PA now than in 2008.

Bush only lost PA in 2004 by a few percentage points... we can erase that this year.
