Belmont, Calif. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a man who carjacked a woman and her 5-year-old daughter in Belmont ran out of gas about eight miles later.

OAKLAND -- As police were entering his third-floor hideout in the heart of Chinatown on Thursday morning, a 32-year-old man wanted on marijuana and gun charges in Georgia jumped through a closed window and broke both his legs when he landed on the street below. Inside the converted warehouse, police arrested his 30-year-old girlfriend, also a Georgia fugitive, and seized marijuana worth at least $300,000. The two were identified as Phillip Laughlin and Sarah Townsend. Placer County sheriff's deputies have arrested a Lincoln landfill employee on suspicion of embezzlement by Placer County Sheriff's deputies.

BERKELEY - -- A woman was arrested today after she ran over a Berkeley police officer's foot when she tried to leave while being cited for a parking violation, authorities said. . . . Berkeley police Officer Griselda Ferrera stopped the motorist near the corner and told her to wait while the ticket was being written, authorities said. Instead, Markeysha Bilal-Fields, 47, of Richmond tried to leave the scene in her black Mazda, police said. The car ran over Ferrera's foot, authorities said.

One good prank deserves another. That's what these Knoxville Fire Department investigators figured when they turned the tables on a suspect in a rash of bogus reports of emergencies. Whittier -- Police shot and wounded a driver who backed his car into a patrol vehicle following a chase late Friday, a police official said. The driver was hit several times and was taken to a hospital emergency room, Officer Alan dela Pena said. "He's alive but I can't say what his condition is," dela Pena said. The man's identity was not released. A woman passenger was not injured, dela Pena said. LOS ANGELES - One man was shot to death and another wounded after they allegedly attempted a carjacking against two FBI agents who were conducting surveillance, officials said. The FBI agents apparently were targeted randomly and the incident remains under investigation. FBI officials Friday declined to identify the slain suspect pending the notification of his relatives. The identity of the wounded suspect also was being withheld, along with the names of two others who were arrested because they are minors.
