Whittier -- Police shot and wounded a driver who backed his car into a patrol vehicle following a chase late Friday, a police official said.
The driver was hit several times and was taken to a hospital emergency room, Officer Alan dela Pena said.
"He's alive but I can't say what his condition is," dela Pena said.
The man's identity was not released.
A woman passenger was not injured, dela Pena said.
Officers began chasing the car when the driver ignored orders to pull over after a traffic violation, dela Pena said.
KCAL-TV news footage showed the car being pursued by several police cruisers in this suburb east of Los Angeles at about 8:30 p.m. when it made a U-turn at an intersection.
It veered onto and then back out of a driveway and bumped into trailer-sized trash container parked on the street.
A police car blocked the vehicle in from behind but the fleeing car backed up and bumped the patrol car. An officer got out with his gun drawn as the car moved forward and back again, hitting both the trash container and the cruiser a second time.
