KEY POINTS * Journalists are exposing Twitter's politically biased and capricious content-moderation protocols—but self-harm content continues unabated. * Twitter stifled criticism of the platform for not enforcing its prohibition on self-harm—while ignoring self-harm posts. * Nearly 25% of girls 12 to 16 are intentionally injuring themselves, mostly with knives and razor blades. They need help, not a platform. While Twitter personnel are censoring ideas and deplatforming people it doesn’t like—and journalists are exposing Twitter's politically biased and capricious content-moderation policies—the platform is paying virtually no attention to the self-harm its younger users were posting and encouraging. Twitter was busy interfering...

Teenagers and young adults have had their mental health battered by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a vast study of medical records and insurance claims nationwide. FAIR, a nonprofit organization which describes itself as being 'dedicated to bringing transparency to healthcare costs and health insurance information', released the findings of their report into mental health on Tuesday. They studied 32 billion private healthcare claim records, looking at the 13-18 age range and 19-22, and tracking month-by-month changes from January to November 2020, compared to the same months in 2019.

Far more U.S. teens than previously thought are transgender or identify themselves using other nontraditional gender terms, with many rejecting the idea that girl and boy are the only options, new research suggests. The study looked at students in ninth and 11th grade and estimated that nearly 3 percent are transgender or gender nonconforming, meaning they don't always self-identify as the sex they were assigned at birth. [Snip] The study is an analysis of a 2016 statewide survey of almost 81,000 Minnesota teens. Nearly 2,200 identified as transgender or gender nonconforming. The study found that these kids reported worse mental...

A new study reveals that virtually all transgender students are self-harming in Scotland. The pro-gay “Stonewall” school report for Scotland with the University of Cambridge shows 96 percent of the country’s transgender youth engage in self-destructive behavior, including cutting themselves. The report also found “incredibly high levels” of mental health issues in transgenders. “School Report Scotland” surveyed more than 400 LGBTQI Scottish students. The survey focused on bullying and name-calling but also revealed suicide attempts, depression, anxiety, and self-harm. Besides 96 percent of trans students attempting self-harm, 60 percent of homosexuals also self-harm, the survey found. While 40 percent of...

OTTAWA — When he cut off his right arm with a “very sharp power tool,” a man who now calls himself One Hand Jason let everyone believe it was an accident. But he had for months tried different means of cutting and crushing the limb that never quite felt like his own, training himself on first aid so he wouldn’t bleed to death, even practicing on animal parts sourced from a butcher.“My goal was to get the job done with no hope of reconstruction or re-attachment, and I wanted some method that I could actually bring myself to do,” he told...

We teach kids that honesty is the best policy, but at one Virginia Beach middle school it might be better to keep the truth to yourself. Last Thursday at Bayside Middle School, sixth grader Adrionna Harris came to the aide of a classmate who was cutting his arm. She faces expulsion for taking a razor from the student, throwing it away and convincing him what he was doing wasn’t right. She thought she was doing the right thing, so on Friday she told the school administration what happened. The way school officials responded led to this question: was the school’s...

17 Pct. at 2 Schools Practice Self-Abuse Survey: 17 Percent at 2 Ivy League Schools Practice Cutting, Other Self-Abuse By LINDSEY TANNER The Associated Press CHICAGO Jun 5, 2006 (AP) CHICAGO - Nearly 1 in 5 students at two Ivy League schools say they have purposely injured themselves by cutting, burning or other methods, a disturbing phenomenon that psychologists say they are hearing about more often. For some young people, self-abuse is an extreme coping mechanism that seems to help relieve stress; for others it's a way to make deep emotional wounds more visible. The results of the survey...

BOURNEMOUTH, Great Britain, April 25, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Nurses are pushing for a policy change that would allow patients who cut and burn themselves to keep their blades and other implements with them in hospital settings. The BBC reported today on the request made by nurses in the Royal College of Nursing. Pointing to a pilot project undertaken by St. George’s mental health hospital in Staffordshire, the nurses say allowing self-harming such as cutting or burning to continue helps patients to deal with past mental trauma and reduces thoughts of suicide. St. George’s Hospital provides patients with cleaning equipment for...
