WASHINGTON (AP) -- The lead regulator investigating the collapse of Jon Corzine's securities firm, MF Global, worked alongside him for 18 years at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. The two later collaborated to pass a law intended to prevent accounting scandals. Gary Gensler, chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, rose to become Goldman's co-head of finance before leaving in 1997. Corzine left Goldman in 1999, after serving as chairman and CEO. The two later collaborated when Corzine was a senator and Gensler worked on Capitol Hill. As a key staffer for Sen. Paul Sarbanes, D-Md., Gensler advised Sarbanes on the...

Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, has summoned some of the nation's top executives to Capitol Hill to defend their assessment that the new national health care reform law will cost their companies hundreds of millions of dollars in health insurance expenses. Waxman is also demanding that the executives give lawmakers internal company documents related to health care finances -- a move one committee Republicans describes as "an attempt to intimidate and silence opponents of the Democrats' flawed health care reform legislation." In filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the companies -- so...

Why are the Pharisees of Accounting in the U.S. trying so hard to destroy American business? Having crippled high tech entrepreneurship and made it nearly impossible for any U.S. company to ‘go public’, the people who set the rules of financial disclosure are now making corporate financials so obscure that investors literally have no way of knowing the financial condition of their companies.

When Congress comes back from its August recess in September, one of the quiet controversies lurking in the wings will move to center stage as Democrats resume their campaign to slash funding for the Office of Labor Management Standards in the Department of Labor. While this may sound like typical Washington insiders baseball, the function and operations of OLMS are anything but inconsequential — monitoring the financial disclosure compliance of labor unions. Because OLMS has been the Bush administration's chief tool for ramping up union financial accountability standards, it appeared in the Democrats' crosshairs even before their new majority in...

Audit Trail recently sat down with 2008 Presidential Candidate Ron Paul, R-TX, to get his views on Sarbanes-Oxley 5 Years Later, as one of only three members of congress at the time to vote against the bill. Audit Trail: It has been five years since the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley. Has your initial position on the legislation changed, or do you still believe it was an overreaction to a real problem? Ron Paul: The damage inflicted on American businesses and capitol markets by Sarbanes-Oxley has strengthened my conviction that this legislation should be repealed. In 2000, nine of every ten dollars...

    1) Should judicial candidates be potentially subject to a filibuster, or should that rule be changed? The bi-partisan “Gang of 14” should be applauded for coming together to find common-sense solutions when partisanship threatened to tear the Senate apart. Many state and federal districts have had judicial vacancies prolonged due to political posturing in Washington. This must end. If a nominee is clearly qualified to serve as a judge, the nominee deserves an up or down vote. Any nominee outside of the mainstream would not receive the votes necessary for confirmation, so the threat of a filibuster would not apply.2)...

It’s Location, Location, Location in the Sarbox Aftermath The clear winner here is not America. By Mallory Factor ------------------------------------------- America used to boast the most hospitable business climate in the world. Recently, though, U.S. businesses have lost their edge, giving a slight advantage to foreign financial hubs. On July 11, the London Stock Exchange (LSE) affirmed that it drew 50 international initial public offerings (IPOs) from 15 different countries in the first half of 2006. Compare that to the combined 15 international IPOs offered on the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exhange in the similar period. At the root of...

It was the volume of media attention that a candidate hovering at 1 percent in the polls would normally welcome. A stand of microphones and a row of television cameras and reporters awaited David B. Dickerson, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Maryland, at a news conference scheduled on his behalf yesterday afternoon in Towson.

Mfume Leads Cardin In Sharply Divided Primary, Poll Shows Former NAACP president Kweisi Mfume leads U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin in what is shaping up to be a racially polarized Democratic Senate primary in Maryland, even as roughly a third of the electorate has not settled on a candidate, according to a new Washington Post poll. For the first time in Maryland history, both major parties have the potential to nominate an African American, and the poll suggests that the hopes of all of the major candidates will depend on their ability to cross racial boundaries for support. As they...

Three US congressmen are pushing for an amendment to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), the law designed to make executives more accountable, in a bid to water down the regulations for medium-sized companies. Gregory Meeks, a Democrat, has joined Republicans Tom Feeney and Pete Sessions to introduce an amendment to the Act that would exempt companies with a market value of less than $700m (£377m) or annual revenue of less than $125m and fewer than 1,500 shareholders from having to comply with the regulations. The unusual cross-party move comes just days after Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, the two top executives...

Maryland Democrats are keeping close tabs on the top Republican candidate in the state's U.S. Senate race, by videotaping Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele's campaign stops and noting his fundraisers with Bush administration officials. "God bless them," Mr. Steele said. "They're so scared, and I love them for that." Derek Walker, executive director of the state's Democratic Party, said videotaping is a typical campaign tactic and that party members are "learning as much as we can" about Mr. Steele. "We certainly take Michael Steele seriously," Mr. Walker said. "And we take George Bush and Karl Rove's threats of bringing $20...
