In the new study, the researchers created a “pseudovirus” that was surrounded by SARS-CoV-2 classic crown of spike proteins, but did not contain any actual virus. Exposure to this pseudovirus resulted in damage to the lungs and arteries of an animal model—proving that the spike protein alone was enough to cause disease. Tissue samples showed inflammation in endothelial cells lining the pulmonary artery walls. The team then replicated this process in the lab, exposing healthy endothelial cells (which line arteries) to the spike protein. They showed that the spike protein damaged the cells by binding ACE2. This binding disrupted ACE2’s...

THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS’ SPIKE PROTEIN PLAYS ADDITIONAL KEY ROLE IN ILLNESS If you remove the replicating capabilities of the virus, it still has a major damaging effect on the vascular cells, simply by virtue of its ability to bind to this ACE2 receptor, the S protein receptor, now famous thanks to COVID The paper, published on April 30, 2021, in Circulation Research, also shows conclusively that COVID-19 is a vascular disease, demonstrating exactly how the SARS-CoV-2 virus damages and attacks the vascular system on a cellular level. The findings help explain COVID-19’s wide variety of seemingly unconnected complications, and could...
  • World’s first ever human-monkey hybrid grown in lab in China

A HUMAN-MONKEY hybrid has been grown in a lab in China in a world first scientific breakthrough. Scientists have successfully formed a hybrid human-monkey embryo – with the experiment taking place in China to avoid “legal issues”. Researchers led by scientist Juan Carlos Izpisúa spliced together the genes to grow a monkey with human cells. It is said the creature could have grown and been born, but scientists aborted the process. The team, made up of members of the Salk Institute in the United States and the Murcia Catholic University, genetically modified the monkey embryos. Researchers deactivates the genes which...
  • Meet the Renegades of the Intellectual Dark Web

...But as the members of the Intellectual Dark Web become genuinely popular, they are also coming under more scrutiny. On April 21, Kanye West crystallized this problem when he tweeted seven words that set Twitter on fire: “I love the way Candace Owens thinks.” Candace Owens, the communications director for Turning Point USA, is a sharp, young, black conservative — a telegenic speaker with killer instincts who makes videos with titles like “How to Escape the Democrat Plantation” and “The Left Thinks Black People Are Stupid.” Mr. West’s praise for her was sandwiched inside a longer thread that referenced many...
  • Study Breaks Down Aging Process, May Lead to Solutions to Age-Related Diseases

Salk Institute researchers studied a mutation in Werner syndrome to get a better understanding of aging as well as age-related diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. Nobody likes the idea of aging. But the alternative — which is to die young — doesn’t have too many fans either. That’s why a study that offers possible new ways to prevent and treat age-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease has attracted attention. The study was published today in the journal Science. But don’t throw out that bottle of Gray Be Gone just yet. The scientists at the Salk...

Researchers say it may be possible to slow and even reverse aging by keeping DNA more stably packed together in our cells In a breakthrough discovery, scientists report that they have found the key to keeping cells young. In a study published Thursday in Science, an international team, led by Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte at the Salk Institute, studied the gene responsible for an accelerated aging disease known as Werner syndrome, or adult progeria, in which patients show signs of osteoporosis, grey hair and heart disease in very early adulthood. These patients are deficient in a gene responsible for copying...
  • Adult Stem Cells Reprogrammed In Their Natural Environment

In recent years, stem cell researchers have become very adept at manipulating the fate of adult stem cells cultured in the lab. Now, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies achieved the same feat with adult neural stem cells still in place in the brain. They successfully coaxed mouse brain stem cells bound to join the neuronal network to differentiate into support cells instead. The discovery, which is published ahead of print on Nature Neuroscience's website, not only attests to the versatility of neural stem cells but also opens up new directions for the treatment of neurological diseases, such...

Morally challenged cloning research The headline was buried in the Jan. 21 NewScience article reporting on another potential scandal in the cloning world. This one involved claims made in 2003 by researcher Hui-Zhen Sheng of China. In an paper published in New Scientist, Sheng reported he had successfully harvested embryonic stem cells from rabbit-human embryos, potentially finding a way to alleviate the shortage of human eggs needed for cloning experimentation.Scientists now wary after being duped by fallen clone king Hwang Woo-Suk are sounding the alarm on Sheng, because no one has been able to duplicate his work. Scientists did not...
