Dell workers are being called back to the office full-time. The company’s CEO, Michael Dell, wrote that they are “retiring hybrid policy,” starting March 3rd for all employees that live near the office—according to a memo as obtained by Business Insider. The email, sent Friday morning, lauds in-person human collaboration as the most efficient form of working, an interesting argument for a tech company. “What we're finding is that for all the technology in the world, nothing is faster than the speed of human interaction,” wrote Dell, claiming that a “thirty second conversation can replace an email back-and-forth that goes...

More than 500 employees from Amazon’s cloud-computing division have asked the company to reconsider its five-day in-office mandate set to take effect in January. The new policy requires workers to be in the office five days a week, an increase from the current three-day-a-week mandate that has been in place since May 2023. Amazon workers protested the initial three-day-a-week mandate as well, but Amazon did not change course. About 15 months later, it increased the requirement for in-office work in an effort to return to pre-pandemic norms. The employee letter is in response to comments from Garman at a recent...

“I feel more concerned today than I did two years ago about resource adequacy,” he said Monday. “Load is growing much faster than we had projected then, which even back then was an eye-popping set of numbers.” PJM’s recent capacity auction, in which PJM secures commitments from generators to provide electricity in the future, produced higher than usual prices. Those prices have thus far served their purpose of incentivizing some generators to delay retirement and others to consider investments in new generation. “I haven’t seen any forecast of load that allows me to rest and say we’re good,” he said...

3M’s (NYSE:MMM) new chief executive is asking managers to return to working in the office, pulling back from his predecessor’s remote-friendly policy that was “rooted in flexibility and trust,” Bloomberg News reported Monday. The industrial conglomerate has about 85,000 employees worldwide and will expect, but not require, those at the director level and above to come into an office Tuesday through Thursday. Those days are described as “collaboration days.” The new rules take effect next month at the company’s Minnesota headquarters for employees who live within 50 miles of the office. The policy will expand globally over time in line...

Bolstering the opinions of those C-suite execs who want to see boots on the ground is a new piece of research which has found that hybrid or remote working options are allowing people to slack on the job. Hybrid employees often praise the flexibility that working from home offers, from being able to pick the kids up from school or daycare, to doing laundry in between meetings. The survey, however, has found that some home workers aren’t giving their all to their jobs. Nearly half (46 per cent) say they multitask on work calls. Online shopping, social media and cleaning...

It's been more than four years since the pandemic hit the U.S. and made remote work commonplace, and as companies continue to try to lure employees back to the office, some workers say they are ignoring the pleas. A new survey from ResumeBuilder.com found one in five workers admit they are not following their employer's return-to-office (RTO) policies, with some acknowledging they leave early or even solicit a colleague to swipe or sign them in during their absence – and the most common policy-violators are those who work a hybrid schedule. In the survey that polled more than 1,000 workers,...

Dell Technologies said Thursday that their global sales team employees who are able to work from the company offices must do so five days a week, starting Sept. 30, according to a memo seen by Reuters. The change is to leverage collaborative environment and “grow skills,” which requires the team to be in the office, the memo said. “Working remotely should be the exception rather than the routine,” it added. The field representatives from the sales team are expected to spend five days a week with customers and partners, or in the office. The team was previously required to work...

Some Amazon workers are refusing to "disagree and commit," as one of the company's famed leadership principles requires of those who aren't on board with a decision. Instead, hundreds of the online retailing giant's employees are complaining that CEO Andy Jassy's five-days-per-week return-to-office mandate, announced last week, will negatively impact their lives—and productivity at work—and how they hope the company will reverse course. The feedback is from an anonymous survey created by Amazon employees that was viewed by Fortune on Tuesday. Corporate employees have shared it widely via the messaging app Slack, including in one "remote advocacy" Slack channel with...
