3M’s (NYSE:MMM) new chief executive is asking managers to return to working in the office, pulling back from his predecessor’s remote-friendly policy that was “rooted in flexibility and trust,” Bloomberg News reported Monday.
The industrial conglomerate has about 85,000 employees worldwide and will expect, but not require, those at the director level and above to come into an office Tuesday through Thursday. Those days are described as “collaboration days.”
The new rules take effect next month at the company’s Minnesota headquarters for employees who live within 50 miles of the office. The policy will expand globally over time in line with local labor laws, according to the company.
Desk-based workers at the company for the past three years were allowed to work remotely for the most part in consultation with their managers, under a policy dubbed “Work Your Way.”
Bill Brown took over as chief executive in May after a turbulent period of sluggish growth and litigation resulting from combat earplugs and forever chemicals.

LOL. I guess its the "trust" part that didn't work. Seriously, I thought pretty much everyone was back to work at least three days.
Oh! The horror!
Its a nation of nancy-boy workers...
Communism is soooo wonderful...
Get used to it...
This is just the new way to conduct layoffs without having to call it a layoff.
I can’t imagine being trapped in a building all day with a bunch of woke leftist freaks.
I think there is a lot of truth to that.
However, I think a lot of high quality workers may prefer to be at home (a lot of low quality workers too). But if some workers refuse to come in, the corporations may eventually find out that they have laid off their most productive people.
The Pareto rule is always worth thinking about. 80% of the work is done by 20% of the workers. If management screws up and loses part of that 20%, they lose a heck of a lot.
I think staff won't be too far behind, except now there aren't enough desks - so maybe two-days a week.
What I spend on gas for the commute I'll make up for with the free coffee....
sticky situation...
Listening to younger people talk about their jobs, the more I come to the conclusion that being a successful work-from-home employee means having a non-essential job. It’s one of those measurements, like “the importance of what you do is inversely proportional to how long your job title is”.
The mass transit system in Minneapolis has to be seen to be believed.
In the city it is above ground and the main downtown stop has no shelter.
That means sub zero wind chills for a couple of winter months.
Bonus—you get to stared at by hostile Somalis on the train.
(I used to have to travel there on business—so glad I am retired.)
I would take 2 days a week. That’s 4x what I get for telework a PP.
Party’s over.
You know it, bro. I’ll eventually be in an office somewhere. Hopefully, I won’t have to move back to Communist-ruled Maryland to have a satisfactory office job.
There is no "back to the office" for them - they were never there to start with.
We've also noticed a marked deficiency in the locals' command of the English language. These denser populated areas have a noticeable increase in foreigners in the last four years. I suspect there are managers who expect the better employees to come into the office and "mentor" the incompetent hires.
No way you're going back.
If you are a Director and don’t take full advantage of this you are an egg-sucking moron.
I work in a hospital full of them.
