The editor of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland told readers that critical coverage of Donald Trump was necessary despite their objections. “The north star here is truth,” Chris Quinn wrote in a letter from the editor on Saturday. “We tell the truth, even when it offends some of the people who pay us for information.” “The truth is that Donald Trump undermined faith in our elections in his false bid to retain the presidency,” he continued. “He sparked an insurrection intended to overthrow our government and keep himself in power. No president in our history has done worse. This is...

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Plain Dealer on Monday laid off 14 newsroom employees as part of a staff reduction first announced in December. The 14, most of them reporters and all members of Local 1 of the News Guild of the Communication Workers of America, account for about a third of the unionized news-gathering staff. One additional journalist will depart later this month. The company had earlier announced plans to eliminate 29 other jobs in May by shifting its page-production work to a centralized outside system. Three of those production staffers will move to the newsroom, however, reducing the net...

After eight years of George W. Bush, America needs a change in direction and a change in tone. It needs a president who understands that, yes, the world can be dangerous, but it is also complex. That the United States cannot defend its freedom by abandoning its principles. That it cannot ignore its allies one day and demand their help the next. arn, and not confuse loyalty with competence. Who will ask Americans to sacrifice in the service of their country, not their party or self-interest. Who will be the leader Bush promised eight years ago -- a unifier, not...

REGINA BRETT DOES THEOLOGYBy James CsankMichNews.comJun 2, 2006 Regina who? Well might you ask. Here is a clue: (1) Regina Brett is a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and a Catholic. Here is another clue, which seems to be, but is not, in conflict with the first: (2) The Cleveland Plain Dealer is a liberal, secularist, and anti-Catholic newspaper. The clues are reconciled in the answer: Brett is the PD’s token Catholic, the kind of Catholic it likes: liberal, feminist, pro-abortion, and pro-gay agenda. She flaunts her Catholicism because it gives her the standing to criticize the Church for not being...

Feds Want to Know How Cleveland Papers Got Leaked Documents Published: July 22, 2005 10:00 AM ET CLEVELAND After a weekly paper in Cleveland published a report, The Plain Dealer ran a previously delayed story about an investigation of the city's former mayor, and now a federal prosecutor is asking a judge to find out who leaked the information. U.S. Attorney Gregory A. White filed the motion Thursday, the same day The Plain Dealer reported that former Mayor Michael R. White was a target of a federal investigation that began three years ago and that led to the indictment of...

Anti-abortion sermons and Catholic women Thursday, October 21, 2004Connie SchultzPlain Dealer Columnist This column is for the Catholic women who feel they cannot speak publicly about their feelings of anger, hurt and betrayal with their beloved church. For weeks, Catholic women have written and called me, often anonymously. They approach me in public, at meetings and after speeches, or politely interrupt me at the grocery store, in restaurants, even sporting events. These are heartbreaking conversations.

While at DU I discovered the following: I learned this morning that tomorrow morning's edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer will endorse George Bush for a second four-year term. What makes this particularly disgraceful and quite terrifying is that the seven-member editorial board of the PD voted 5-2 to endorse John Kerry. The publisher overruled them and announced the paper would support Bush. Similarly, the Lorain Journal editors were told that either they endorse George Bush or they endorse no one. So, they are endorsing no one. Let us e-mail letters of support at letters@plaind.com

A RIGHT TO KNOW As a lifelong consumer of the written word displayed on paper, the prospect of talking to readers by way of a "blog" is a little unnerving. I've decided to tip toe into these electronic waters because I recognize that to ignore change is to be consumed by it. At The Plain Dealer we communicate with our readers a number of ways, the pages of the paper being the most obvious. But the "how to reach us" box on 2A lists e-mail addresses and phone numbers for senior editors and similar information appears at the bottom of...

Cleveland Plain Dealer Declares War on Citizens of Ohio. I am not exaggerating when I say that this story is truly disturbing. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has just stated that it will publish the names and addresses of every person who avails themselves of Ohio's new concealed carry permit law and applies for such a permit. The editors of the Plain Dealer explained thusly: Journalists will be able to access permit information because of their profession. But you - as a doctor, lawyer or factory worker - won't be able to determine whether your neighbor or ex-husband has obtained a...

Very well concealed One of the longest and most contentious legislative debates in recent Ohio his tory has ended. Within the next 10 days, Ohioans can expect to be granted the right to secretly carry guns in public. This represents social progress only to those who hunger to carry a weapon whenever they step outside of their homes, or those fatigued by an inane debate that has stalled action on far more important concerns. From Our Advertiser The measure authorizing concealed carry was sent Wednesday to Gov. Bob Taft, who promptly indicated that he would sign it. The law will...

Mayor takes complete control 08/16/03 Mayor Jane, there's your headline. If I had been in the office yesterday when your press secretary, Celeste Glasgow, called to request just that wording, we might have kept this little bit of unpleasantness just between us. But assistant metro editor Mark Vosburgh took Glasgow's call and he filled me in after I arrived. He told me all about how disappointed your office was that The Plain Dealer failed to include your picture in our coverage of Thursday's power outage. I assure you, it wasn't a deliberate snub or anything personal against you....
