Petco has stopped selling shock collars and it’s calling on others in the pet industry to follow its lead. The San Diego, California-based pet supply retailer announced on Tuesday that it had stopped selling all electronic shock collars, including both human- and bark-activated models. Petco CEO Ron Coughlin said in the announcement that shock collars “have been shown to increase fear, anxiety and stress in dogs.”

HONOLULU - Two dog owners filed a lawsuit claiming their pets were mutilated while being groomed at an Oahu pet store. The lawsuit filed in state court Monday said plaintiff Gladys Kapuwai dropped off her dog Dodo for grooming at the Petco store in Kaneohe in July, and that the pet was returned with its ear cut off. In addition, there appeared to be an effort to "reattach, glue or sew" the ear back on, the lawsuit states. "I couldn't believe what they did. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and San Diego-based Petco Animal Supplies Inc. announced an agreement on Tuesday.
