The following is adapted from a talk delivered on September 12, 2023, at the Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship on Hillsdale’s Washington, D.C., campus, as part of the AWC Family Foundation Lecture Series. The transgender movement is pressing its agenda everywhere. Most publicly, activist teachers are using classrooms to propagandize on its behalf and activist health professionals are promoting the mutilation of children under the euphemistic banner of “gender-affirming care.” The sudden and pervasive rise of this movement provokes two questions: where did it come from, and how has it proved so successful? The story...

A young Pocatello man and his mother were recently arrested after police say the man raped a 15-year-old girl. His mother later took the girl across state lines for an abortion without parental consent. Kadyn Leo Swainston, 18, and his mother, Rachael Swainston, 42 both of Pocatello, have each been charged with several felony crimes following a Pocatello police investigation that was launched in June after a 15-year-old girl’s mother contacted authorities to report that her daughter had been raped, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained. Kadyn has been charged with rape, second-degree kidnapping...

Another member of the U.S. House of Representatives is declining to run in 2024. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) will step down at the end of his term after representing Oregon in the House for 29 years, he announced on Oct. 30. "Simply said, it is time to continue my life’s mission without the burden of day-to-day politics," Mr. Blumenauer, 75, said in a statement. He said the choice to step down was difficult but that he will keep "championing livable communities starting right here in Portland and being a resource and a partner for the next generation.” Mr. Blumenauer has...

The following article, Oregon State Says Students Don’t Need to Know White Supremacist Stuff Like Reading, Writing, and Math, was first published on October 19.The State of Oregon’s miseducation establishment has finally gone to the logical extreme of woke leftism by ruling that school kids no longer have to learn to read, write, or do math because minorities aren’t capable of learning that boring old white supremacist stuff. On Oct. 19, the state Board of Education decided to throw out all standards for reading, writing, and math because the standards “harm minorities.”Of course, they only “harm minorities” because Oregon’s miseducation establishment...

Oregon school chiefs have again suspended the need for high schoolers to prove their math, reading and writing skills in order to graduate. The State Board of Education voted last week to continue the suspension for another five years amid claims they are unfair on minority students who don't test well. In order to earn a diploma, graduating students were previously required to earn standardized test scores indicating proficiency in reading, writing and math. But this was put on pause during the pandemic as standardized tests weren't happening amid school closures. Following a unanimous vote by the Oregon State Board...

With tensions growing around the Israeli-Hamas war, police arrested a man who fired a “splatter ball gun” into a crowd marching in support of Palestinians in Eugene, Oregon, on Oct. 21. Protesters drew weapons in response and the Eugene Police Department (EPD) stepped in to disarm and de-escalate the tense situation. According to EPD, approximately 200 protesters gathered near the Federal Courthouse on Oct. 21 for a “Free Palestine Rally.” Participants carried signs with messages that called for a “ceasefire now” and urged President Joe Biden to stop “funding genocide.” At about 3:15 p.m., the group began to march. The...

A person riding in the extra seat in the cockpit of a Horizon Air passenger jet tried to shut down the engines in midflight and had to be subdued by the two pilots. The San Francisco-bound flight on Sunday diverted to Portland, where it was met by law enforcement officers. . . . . “We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. And he — doesn’t sound like he’s causing any issue in the back right now, and I think he’s subdued,” one of the pilots said on audio captured by LiveATC.com. “Other...

Oregon high school students won’t have to prove basic mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate from high school until at least 2029, the state Board of Education decided unanimously on Thursday, extending the pause on the controversial graduation requirement that began in 2020. The vote went against the desires of dozens of Oregonians who submitted public comments insisting the standards should be reinstated, including former Republican gubernatorial candidate Christine Drazan. Backlash against the lowered standard had already delayed the vote, originally slated to take place in September. Opponents argued that pausing the requirement devalues an Oregon diploma. Giving...

During a portion of an interview with PBS aired on Tuesday’s broadcast of “NewsHour,” Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Jerry Cioeta stated that the city is “just in disarray” as it deals with crime. “NewsHour” Correspondent Stephanie Sy asked, “Do you think that [Measure] 110 [the initiative decriminalizing possession of small amounts of drugs] increased demand?” Cioeta answered, “I think it’s too hard to tell. Because fentanyl hit when 110 hit, when COVID was here, it was the perfect storm for a drug epidemic like we’d never seen before.” Sy then said, “As part of Measure 110, police are directed to...

A couple’s recent trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan, became a nightmare after reaching crime-ridden and Democrat-controlled Portland, Oregon. Adrian Hammerle and Eleora Gouine were excited about the 2,300-mile journey to Portland, where Adrian previously lived for a few years, KATU reported Thursday. They'd heard about Portland's crime issues but understood it's something all big cities are going through. This understanding changed after their windows were broken out and all their belongings were stolen two different times in a matter of days.https://t.co/JFSyKvKaAQ — KATU News (@KATUNews) October 6, 2023 Eleora said they knew about the crime plaguing the city but were...

PORTLAND - The drive west was everything Adrian Hammerle and Eleora Gouine had hoped it would be. The trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Portland, Oregon was a long one -- 2,300 miles -- but Adrian couldn't wait to introduce Eleora to Portland. After all, he'd lived here from 2017 to 2020. They'd heard about Portland's crime issues but understood it's something all big cities are going through. The day after arriving at their downtown Portland hotel, though, their excitement turned upside down when they headed to their car to find some coffee. “And when we got to the car,...

Portland's public safety commissioner has told people to not call 911 unless they're at risk of death - as the Democrat-run city continues to struggle with rampant drug use and a slew of overdoses. Commissioner Rene Gonzalez told locals that its emergency service hotline was overwhelmed with people calling about members of the public suffering fentanyl overdoses. Oregon decriminalized hard drug use three years ago. As a result, he urged people to only call 911 in a life or death emergency, as it was revealed paramedics had been called to deal with eight suspected fentanyl overdoses in the city's once-tony...

An Oregon school has refused to comment on whether a school bully who was seen pulverizing a smaller girl to the floor of a middle school hallway is transgender. The incident happened at Hazelbrook Middle School in Tualatin last week, with school spokesperson Traci Rose telling The Oregonian that federal law barred them from discussing a student's gender identity. Horrific video footage seen millions of times online showed the aggressor - a well-built student in girl's clothes - dragging another smaller female pupil by her backpack in the hallway before pulling her hair and hitting her several times. The attack...
