You have already read 0%Do you love Linux because of its user-friendly, exceptionally secure, heavy-duty, and open-source, making it easy to customize and maintain? If so, you’re not alone. It is no wonder that Linux has captured the lion's share of the IT market. Business leaders and IT decision makers have poured their trust into Linux and prefer it for almost every business use case, and today, ZDNet reports that 96.3% of the top web servers run on Linux. The downside is that attacks on Linux are steadily rising, as cybercriminals have come to recognize the OS as an increasingly viable...

Windows 10 22H2 will be the final version of the operating system, Microsoft said in a blog post on Thursday. Moving forward, all editions of Windows 10 will be supported with monthly security updates until October 14th, 2025, when Microsoft will end support. (Some releases on the Long-Term Servicing Channel, or LTSC, will get updates past that end of support date.) Microsoft is encouraging users to now transition to Windows 11 because Windows 10 won’t be getting any new features. Now that Windows 11 has been out for more than a year and a half, it’s not too surprising that...

DONGGUAN, China — Huawei has launched its own operating system — the HongmengOS, known in English as the HarmonyOS, said the CEO of the Chinese tech giant’s consumer division, Richard Yu, on Friday. Speaking at the Huawei Developer Conference in the Chinese city of Dongguan, Yu said the operating system can be used across different devices from smartphones to smart speakers and even sensors. It’s part of Huawei’s play in the so-called Internet of Things, which refers to devices connected to the internet. HarmonyOS will first be used on “smart screen products,” such as televisions, later this year. Over the...

Huawei Technologies, the largest smartphone vendor in China, said it has developed its own operating systems (OS) for both smartphones and computers, which can be used on its devices in the event that current systems provided by US technology giants are no longer available. The Chinese company has developed a proprietary OS as tensions between the company and the US government could impact the availability of US-made operating systems used on Huawei devices, Huawei’s mobile chief Richard Yu Chengdong, said in an interview with German publication Die Welt. Yu’s comments confirm an earlier report by the South China Morning Post...

All 500 machines on the TOP500 supercomputer list run Linux. Here’s how the little OS that could, did. After years of pushing toward total domination, Linux finally did it. It is running on all 500 of the TOP500 supercomputers in the world, and who knows how many more after that. That’s even more impressive than Intel’s domination of the list, with 92 percent of the processors in the top 500. So, how did Linux get here? How did this upstart operating system created by a college student from Finland 26 years ago steamroll Unix, a creation of Bell Labs and supported...

I know it's voting day and I won't watch this post as well as I usually do, but I have a Samsung Tablet 10.1 gt p7510 that I want to update the OS to at least 4.1. it has 4.01 on it now. I cannot download the Directv app to watch programs on it because you must have at least 4.1 to make it work. I've watched a dozen "rooting" video's on Youtube, some multiple times, but I don't speak Linux or Android. If someone could write a specific tutorial on what apps are needed and what they do and...

CoreOS and Joyent's SmartOS/Triton have worked to redefine, in radically different ways, what an OS needs to be to run applications at scale in the cloud. Now another candidate is set to join the ranks of maverick cloud OSes: OSv, open source, hypervisor-optimized, and "designed to run an application stack without getting in the way.">OSv runs existing Linux applications, but is not itself Linux; it's entirely new and written from the ground up in C/C++. It can run on a slew of hypervisors and virtual machine systems, or in cloud environments like Amazon EC2 or Google Compute Engine. The company claims significant...

According to reports, Apple Inc.'s iOS 8 adoption rates have started to stagnate, increasing only 1% since the last reported figure. Bidness Etc explores the possible reasons behind users' reluctance to shift to Apple's latest mobile operating system. iOS 8 was Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) eighth major mobile operating system. With its release, the company increased focused on refining and enhancing built-in features and functionality, instead of relying on a major overhaul of user interface as with the iOS 7. With iOS 8, Apple incorporated user feedback received from iOS 7 users and developers. Previously, Apple had kept the operating system...

I switched from Windows 7 to Windows 8 from day one, and although I’ve dabbled with Start buttons, Classic Shell being the preferred choice, I learned to live with the Start screen, something that became easier once Microsoft released Windows 8.1 and 8.1 Update. But now that Windows 10 Technical Preview is here, it’s time to once again embrace the Start menu.Windows 10’s Start menu is the perfect blend of Windows 7 and Windows 8.x. Click the Start button and the menu appears, displaying icons on the left and tiles on the right. The top of the Start menu shows...

SHANGHAI — China could have a new homegrown operating system by October to take on imported rivals such as Microsoft, Google and Apple, Xinhua, the government news agency, reported. Computer technology became an area of tension between China and the United States after a number of run-ins over cybersecurity. China is now looking to help its domestic industry catch up with imported systems such as Windows from Microsoft and the mobile operating system Android from Google. The operating system would first appear on desktop devices and later extend to smartphone and other mobile devices, Xinhua reported on Sunday, citing Ni...

Reportedly, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will soon be introducing a brand new computer programming language. This programming language, in turn, would be used to develop an operating system called “Midori” whose operations will not be similar to Windows in any way. The new programming language is code-named “M#” as per reports and is an extension of C#. Midori represents a highly-dependable operating system in which the kernel, device drivers, and applications are all written in managed codes. Managed code is a term coined by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) to identify computer program source code that will execute only under the management of...

Gnome project cofounder and current Xamarin CTO Miguel de Icaza says he's done wrestling with Linux on the desktop, and that he now uses Apple kit exclusively for all of his workstation needs. De Icaza is well known in the open source community for developing a number of client-side technologies for Linux, including the Midnight Commander file shell, the Gnome desktop environment, and the Mono project. But in a blog post on Tuesday, de Icaza wrote that not only does he no longer use Linux for his day-to-day computing needs, but he hasn't actually booted his Linux workstation since October...

When US Air Force researchers last year created the mother-of-all-processors using Sony PlayStation-3 game consoles, it seemed like a stroke of cost-saving genius. To deliver a 53-TerraFLOP processing cluster, the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y., hoovered up 1,700 PlayStation-3 game consoles, then harnessed the power of their combined processors to evaluate new breakthroughs in technology for synthetic aperture radar, high definition video and something called "neuromorphic computing". At the time, the researchers noted that two PlayStation-3 consoles provide 150 GigaFLOPs of processing power for $600, but a single 3.2GHz cell processor delivers 200 GFLOPs for $8,000. Why spend the...

In response to the continuous compromise of networks, multiple countries have begun developing secure platforms and operating systems. Computer companies, university researchers, defense R&D contractors and militaries around the world recognize the criticality of networks and embedded processors within their equipment. They also recognize how vulnerable they are and that’s why so much attention is being given to building in security at every level of the system including the operating system. As discussed here, China’s Trusted Computing Platform (TCP) program has been underway for some time now and can be traced back to the early 2000s. The Chinese TCP includes...

It found that 86 per cent of 4,559 US punters who took part in the survey were happy with Windows 7.
