We need off of big tech. I had hoped "go woke go broke" conservatives would lead the way but that clearly is not happening, Apple Google Microsoft and others will never face the music for going woke.
It is to gamers that we must look, who will drive the future and get us all the heck off of these woke big tech platforms. I know of a few people who would get off of Windows if an official SteamOS release were actually made. I look forward to holding some feet to the fire if all of the from Valve land.
Valve may be a larger player among the small tech companies, but that's who we have to get the job done.

I’d like to buy some Steam Decks for me and my family but I’ll have to strike oil in my backyard and then win the lottery over and over first.
What do it mean? 🤡
It’s Greek to me.
My 19 yo asked for a steam deck two christmases ago. I’m hoping, (and have been suspecting), he may turn out cutting edge. I won’t be around forever. Lol
Explain? Everyone can already use Steam now. So what is the big deal? How many games do you need to live in your mother’s basement?
The Steam Deck is a custom type PC handheld. Think a Nintendo Switch on steroids. $650 price point vs. $200 for the Switch. It plays PC games on a dedicated type OS, not a full blown version of Windows.
Since it launched a couple of companies have launched competitors that do the same thing. Since it’s a PC gaming device they’re leapfrogging one another for improved specs, battery life and features. It’s not like a console or traditional handheld where you’re locked into hardware for 5–7 years.
Do what?
Wait…so I’m supposed to be interested to buy a new stupid game device that I already have anyway with my iPhone [nn] Pro Max? I don’t get this uber geeky gaming silliness hype. What’s the big deal?
I don’t get the appeal either since I have no desire for a handheld gaming device.
The battery life on them is like 2 hours as well since PC games are not optimized at all for power considerations.
My youngest son uses this OS, but since I don’t do gaming it holds no appeal for me. Now if someone was to introduce a new desktop OS that can run MS products without being Windows, that’s something I would be interested in.
It takes a little more nuance to explain this to people who aren’t neck deep in the PC world.
Basic background: Since the dawn of personal computing gaming has been the primary driver of hardware and software innovation as it has been the most intensive use home consumers use a PC for.
Secondary info: Getting another operating system to reach enough usage to have the critical mass to then succeed on its own globally and become a household name is a chicken or the egg problem. It’s why no specific Linux distro has ever become “the one” nor has any other major OS other than Windows, Apple, and maybe Google ever reached the size where the entire industry wants to support it.
The Takeaway: Valves immense global game empire and the recent success of the Steam Deck as well as their software work for Proton which lets almost all Windows games run on their OS... And run well... Puts them in the unique position to offer a Linux distro everyone will use. And not only will it be far more open source than any other option, it will have less bloat and odds are it will start to support all the basics we all want like printers. A true Windows alternative that is focused on running locally on your device without all the MS spy bloat. A system that will ultimately play all your games and HDR movies etc. And maybe a whole lot more because the entire PC industry will support it.
People desperately want something that will do all the basics of what Windows has always done but without the bloat and big brother.
SteamOS actually has the potential to do this. For real. Which is why people are starting to get noisy about supporting it.
Ty. Please tell me they don’t pay you.
It facilitates independent game development by the non-woke
I am so out-of-date!
When first reading, I thought they were referring to steamers of CLOTHING.
LOL
On my iPhone, I’m on level 2570 of Freecell.
And, level 12,050 of Wordscapes.
Yep. I have no life.
And here I clicked on this thread hoping for some Half Life 3 news.
I’d have been better off finding Bigfoot...
My kids don’t need no steam deck, they go outside and play
