People Have Pretty Much Stopped Updating Their iPhones To iOS 8

Apple has updated its App Store to show new statistics for iOS 8, its new mobile operating system. It's not looking good.

9to5Mac reports that iOS 8 adoption has increased by just 1% since Apple last published statistics on the operating system. To make things worse, the statistic that Apple published on its developer site excludes a large number of users who are known to be slow in updating to the latest operating system.

Since Sept. 21, the percentage of mobile devices visiting the App Store running iOS 8 has increased to 47% from 46%.

The slow adoption of iOS 8 could be due to the broken update that Apple published on Sept. 24. The iOS 8.0.1 update was meant to include improvements and fixes for the iPhone, but instead it stopped users of the new iPhone from making calls and disabled the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

We're only a few days into iOS 8 adoption, so there is still a long way to go. But the way that more than half of Apple's customers have balked at new systems shows that the broken update was much more serious than perhaps previously believed: A large number of Apple customers are resisting the update because they saw the news that the newer version disabled people's phones. It's rare for Apple's customers to show such mistrust of Apple's new products.

Having all its customers on the same, current platform is crucial for Apple. Microsoft foundered during the mid-2000s when customers grew tired of updating their Windows PC operating system to ever more glitchy versions. And Google's Android platform is regarded as a second-place format by app developers

I haven’t upgraded on my Ipad. When I upgraded to 7 it ate up another gig of my limited storage space and I’m not giving it any more.

I have yet to update my ipad. Still on v.5.1.1 that was installed in it when I purchased it. Way too many update bugs to contend with and it works just fine the way it is.

It is a racket designed to keep you on the treadmill of always buying new hardware when your present hardware can no longer support the new software.

I scrapped the Verizon plan over a year ago for a pay-as-you-go TracFone.

Cost savings: $85 per month is now $85 per year. My biggest challenge now is to remember to take it out of the car and charge it up once per week.

The savings in the first two months alone enabled me to get the latest Kindle which is waaaaaaay better for viewing sports, e-mail or anything than some stupid little two inch screen on an iPhone.

I got a deal on an Iphone 5s and the update to IOS 8 was painless and I’ve noticed no issues.
I never really used all the features of my Iphone 3s but the deal was good and the phone is better.
The fingerprint reader on the button is very clever.

It also seems to load books better and they are easier to use or maybe I jus gave up when I got my first one in 2011 and the quality of the books is better in 2014.

This is major news?

Please the latest version of Android is still less than 25% of the android installed user base and it was released over a year ago. (http://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html)

Apple will get the issues resolved and will have 80-90% of the installed base upgraded to iOS8 inside of a few months, because unlike android, not every manufacturer puts their own hacks in it, that they have no intention of rewriting to upgrade or takes them forever to do it.

Even if IOS8 would remain at 1% gain in installed base every few weeks, it will reach over 75% adoption in less than 6 months. Reality is, it will be over than in about 3 months from now in a worst case scenario.

Tried to update my Iphone and it would have required me to delete apps, photos, etc. to make enough room for the bloatware update. Forget about it...

I still have a 3GS that’s in great condition and run iOS 5.1.1 - mainly because I like the old Maps app that uses Google maps and the old 3-d look.

I am not trying to be insulting but just offer some help here so don't bite my head off if you dislike my suggestion.

If you back up your iPhone with the free iTunes software (Mac or Windows), you can then free up enough space to do the install (as well as protect your data should the iPhone get lost or stolen!) Once you have the new iOS, restore your archived data and keep on going. Hope this helps.
