Nin, a dreamy-eyed black and white cat who patrolled the Northeast's highest peak as the Mount Washington Observatory's mascot for a dozen years and was the subject of a children's book, has died. Observatory executive director Scot Henley says Nin died on July 14. He had retired in 2007 as top cat and was estimated to be about 19 or 20 years old. A rescued stray from Vermont, Nin was popular. In a Web site posting, Henley wrote summit visitors "undoubtedly scratched their heads with bewilderment when they noticed a rotund white cat patrolling the top of the tallest mountain...

Williams and Reznor were trying to follow the lead of Radiohead by distributing music online without the backing of a label. Like the British supergroup, Williams made the album available for free in one version but he also offered the option of buying a higher-quality digital download for $5. LOS ANGELES - Nine Inch Nails dropped out of the MTV Movie Awards after clashing with the network over an image of President Bush the band planned as a performance backdrop. The Bush image was to accompany the song "The Hand That Feeds," which obliquely criticizes the Iraq war. It includes the lyrics: "What if this whole crusade's a charade / And behind it all there's a price to be paid / For the blood on which we dine / Justified in the name of the holy and the divine."
