It’s hard to decide which part of this story is more remarkable: that a Magnificent Mile department store now hires dogs to sniff customers for guns? That the guy who got busted by the canines this week was arrested seven months ago for having a pistol in another store nearby? Or that he was on electronic monitoring for allegedly attacking a security guard at yet another Mag Mile department store in January? We’ll let you decide. Prosecutors say one of the gun-detecting dogs was on duty Monday afternoon when Derrick Latham, 23, walked into Neiman Marcus, 737 North Michigan. The...

Thieves reportedly targeted a Neiman Marcus store on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and a GameStop on the South Side on Friday night as protesters took the streets to oppose Kyle Rittenhouse’s’ acquittal. At the Neiman Marcus, a group of 15 men reportedly rushed into the department store and left in three vehicles with their stolen merchandise. The protests in Chicago remained largely peaceful, according to FOX 32. "We have to protest tonight to show these right-wingers, to show the system that we won’t back down," demonstrator Shavvir Manjee told the station. "Because the precedent that they’re setting is that these armed...

Neiman Marcus Group filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday, marking one of the highest-profile collapses yet among retailers forced to temporarily close stores in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Neiman Marcus, which filed for bankruptcy in a Houston federal court, said it reached agreement with creditors for $675 million of debtor-in-possession financing to aid operations while it attempts to reorganize. The CEO said they will continue to operate via digital platforms and via relationships with brand partners as well as at select physical locations as states reopen after lockdowns. The luxury department store chain follows J. Crew Group Inc, which...

Neiman Marcus Group is preparing to seek bankruptcy protection as soon as this week, becoming the first major U.S. department store operator to succumb to the economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak, people familiar with the matter said. The debt-laden Dallas-based company has been left with few options after the pandemic forced it to temporarily shut all 43 of its Neiman Marcus locations, roughly two dozen Last Call stores and its two Bergdorf Goodman stores in New York. Neiman Marcus is in the final stages of negotiating a loan with its creditors totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, which would...

They were once the giants of American retail, strong enough to survive wars, the Great Depression, the Great Recession, and the rise of online shopping. But Sears, JCPenney, and others may not be able to survive the CCP virus crisis. “The retailers who were wandering around aimlessly pre-pandemic are going to be substantially less likely to muddle through than they were before,” said Mark Cohen, director of retail studies at the Columbia Business School. During the pandemic, stores have been shuttered. Retailers have furloughed hundreds of thousands of employees and are losing most of their sales. And shoppers have cut...

Neiman Marcus is once again selling Ivanka Trump's fashion line after it disappeared from the retailer's website in early February. Shannon Coulter, the originator of the anti-Trump #GrabYourWallet boycott movement, posted on Twitter on Wednesday that two new Trump brand items had surfaced on the retailer's website.

Mary Carson picks up her leopard-print tote bag and tugs on her leopard-print scarf. “I’m just going to do a little bit of business,” the 77-year-old says as she walks into Neiman Marcus at the Tysons Galleria in Northern Virginia and asks for the manager. He appears in a pinstripe suit and shakes her hand. “I’m very disappointed in what’s happened with the Trump line,” she tells him. “I hate to do this — I’m not a real activist — but I learned a long, long time ago that you cannot mix business and politics.” The manager listens patiently. Carson,...

NEW YORK (AP) — Nordstrom says it will stop selling Ivanka Trump clothing and accessories, creating some questions about the future of the brand elsewhere. That innocuous headline caught my eye Friday, because it confirmed the arrival of what FOX Business Network and SRN financial commentator Lou Dobbs brilliantly calls “Corporate Bullying.” Naturally, Seattle-based Nordstrom stores won’t cop to knuckling-under to threats of “boycotts” by ad hoc online terrorists like the group #Grab Your Wallet. When I contacted Nordstrom headquarters to get the straight-skinny on why Ivanka Trump’s product line is really being dropped. I received the following homogenized, weasel-worded response...

There are certain elections that make you want to wash your hands before voting. And that usually has something to do with the candidates. In California's 10th Senate District, two Democrats who have served in the California Assembly want to fill the state Senate seat of termed-out Ellen Corbett. Former Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi is best-known for her conviction for shoplifting $2,450 worth of clothes at Neiman Marcus in October 2011. She vaguely blamed a "medical condition" for what she termed a "personal mistake." Does that mean she could not tell right from wrong? Or is her selling point that...

The data breach that struck our company spotlighted the sophistication of criminal hacker networks operating across the globe. We know the attack created significant concerns for millions of customers. We will learn from this incident and we will work to make Target, and the wider business community, more secure in the future. One step American businesses could now take that would dramatically improve the security of all credit and debit cards: adoption of chip-enabled smartcards. The technology is already widely used throughout the world. For many reasons, the United States has been slow to embrace the technology at home. We...

Credit card hackers might be developing a taste for the finer things in life. Upscale department store Neiman Marcus confirmed that its database of customer information was hacked last month, independent security researcher Brian Krebs reported on Friday. The Neiman Marcus hack follows news today from Target that its investigation into its recent hack found that thieves made off with the personal and credit card data of up to 110 million Target customers, 70 million more than previously thought.

Maybe there's something about one of the Alameda County Board of Supervisor's five seats that attracts troubled Bay Area politicians. Less than a week after Nadia Lockyer resigned her seat on the board following weeks of scandalous revelations of drug abuse and a sexual affair with a meth adddict, disgraced Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi, D-Hayward, reportedly inquired about the post. Hayashi, who is termed out of the Legislature after this year, contacted three of the four remaining members of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to gauge their interest in appointing her to fill out Lockyer's term until 2014, the Bay...

A San Diego woman has filed a lawsuit against Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Estee Lauder for selling anti-aging creams that allegedly employ false advertising. Debra Scheufler says she wants to make advertisers tell the truth about "age-defying" creams that don't live up to their claims. She filed a class action lawsuit in California. "These products that tout themselves as anti-aging products really target women of my era and kind of suck us into the belief that the clock can actually be turned back, when in fact, it cannot be turned back," Scheufler said. "I wasn't getting any younger."

An urban myth is a modern folk tale, its origins unknown, its believability enhanced simply by the frequency with which it is repeated. NM signature chocolate chip cookie is the subject of one such myth. If you haven't heard the story, NM won't perpetuate it. If you have, the recipe below should serve to refute it. Copy it, print it out, pass it along to friends and family. It's a terrific recipe. And it's absolutely free. TONY Award-winning actress Marissa Jaret Winokur was humiliated by a bunch of snotty Rodeo Drive salesclerks when she shopped for a dress to wear as a presenter at this coming Sunday's Tony Awards. In an episode reminiscent of the scene in "Pretty Woman" when Julia Roberts' call-girl character is humiliated by store attendants, Winokur found out a few days ago how a plus-size girl gets treated in America's chicest shopping spots. .............. Winokur went to Gucci, where she saw a dress in her size that she liked. But she was immediately told by the saleswoman: "Your boobs won't fit...
