Members of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic ice hockey team are under fire for sporting "Keep America Great" hats at a recent rally for President Trump in Las Vegas. The team initially was invited to be in a separate photo line with the president at last week's rally, but they later appeared onstage, according to The Washington Post, with many wearing the hats. Trump had invited team captain Mike Eruzione, 65, along with other players to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice" game in which they beat the four-time defending gold medalist Soviet Union team...

Years before I ever heard of Lake Placid or the Olympics, before I knew the name of a single Russian hockey player, I was a kid in Massachusetts who wanted to be the next Bobby Orr. I grew up skating on Holmes' Pond, which took its name from our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Holmes, who owned it. A man named Phil Thompson, our postman, was the person who told me I should try organized hockey in the Easton Junior Hockey League. He had already been working on it with my mother. He was a fine postman and an even better...

The American squad was a patchwork of college players from the Northeast and the upper Midwest under the direction of coach Herb Brooks. They completed their improbable run to the gold medal on Sunday, Feb. 24, with a 4-2 victory over Finland at the Olympic Fieldhouse in Lake Placid, N.Y. But the movement truly began two days earlier when the U.S. squad stunned the hockey universe with 4-3 victory over the Soviet Union. The CCCP crew was considered the greatest amateur hockey team ever assembled and equal to any NHL franchise.

Flanked by members of the famed "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic hockey team, President Trump celebrated the team's captivating 1980 performance at a campaign rally on Friday. Forty years removed from defeating the Russian hockey team in the semi-finals of the 1980 Olympic Games, Trump honored the U.S. team's historic victory by bringing captain Mike Eruzione and coach Herb Brooks's daughter onstage during a campaign stop in Las Vegas. The team stood behind Trump as the president ran through his stump speech and lashed out at the fake news media. The players wore red Make America Great Again hats and...

Kara Pavelich, the wife of former U.S. Olympic hockey and NHL star Mark Pavelich, died Thursday, Sept. 6, at their Lutsen, Minn., home when she accidentally fell approximately 20 feet from a second-story balcony that has no railing. She was 44. Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk said Saturday that deputies were called to the Pavelich home at 11:32 a.m. Thursday. It is likely that Kara Pavelich was on the balcony seeking better cell phone reception; a cell phone was found beside her. The death is being considered accidental.

Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty’s new “Miracle on Ice” ad is reportedly being hit with a cease and desist letter for using footage from the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team. The Des Moines Register is reporting that ABC Sports is preparing a cease and desist letter for improperly using the hockey footage in its political ad. "It's a violation of our copyright and exclusive proprietary rights," said Louise Argianas, director of rights and clearances for ABC Sports, told the Iowa paper. She said ABC Sports retains exclusive rights in the U.S. for the footage. Pawlenty spokesman Alex Conant responded that the...

On February 22 1980, the US Olympic hockey team defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 at Lake Placid, NY. Until that time, the Russians had not lost an Olympic hockey game since 1968. The Soviets were highly favored to repeat as gold medalists and only weeks earlier, had convincingly defeated the US team 10-3 in a game at Madison Square Garden. Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov pulled goalie Vladislav Tretiak, a move still debated by many. In the closing seconds of the game, Tikhonov did not pull their goalie to put an extra attacker on the ice. The US team went on...

25 years ago today, U.S. hockey team stunned Soviets. By Phil Coffey | NHL.com Today, it's hard to imagine Slava Fetisov as the enemy. Thanks to the holes punched in the "Iron Curtain," the sight of Russian and players from other Eastern Bloc countries is commonplace among the rinks of the NHL. In 1980, Slava Fetisov was regarded as one of the top defensemen in the world. But back in 1980, Fetisov was part of the "Big Red Machine" -- and we're not talking about the Cincinnati Reds. This Big Red Machine was among the most imposing hockey teams ever...

Herb Brooks never really grasped the magnitude of what he and a collection of college boys accomplished 25 years ago, Patti Brooks said last week, and he most likely never would have wanted to have the arena where it took place named for him. When the 1980 Olympic hockey team's Miracle on Ice gold-medal performance was selected the sports event of the 20th century, Herb "was almost incredulous," she recalled. "He just kept repeating that he could not believe that. He was really humble about most things, but I remember he was just so shocked at that one. I don't...

NEW YORK (AP) -- They are middle-aged men now, their hair a little thinner, their bodies a little thicker, pursuing careers, one an oral surgeon, another a financial broker, one a horse rancher, another a university executive, spread across the country from Massachusetts to Minnesota. Twenty-five years ago, they came together and manufactured a miracle. This coming week, they'll gather in Lake Placid, N.Y., for their silver anniversary reunion. The U.S. hockey team won the Olympic gold medal in that tiny Adirondack town in 1980, prevailing against the longest of odds and bringing together a country that was struggling though...

(Jim) Craig, goaltender for the 1980 United States hockey team, stopped 39 shots as the U.S. defeated the Soviet Union 4-3 in the "Miracle on Ice." He was back in Lake Placid Saturday, helping light the Olympic torch in commemorating the silver anniversary of the Games. It's been a quarter-century since Al Michaels uttered the now famous words, "Do you believe in miracles?" The same amount of time has passed since the Cold War took sport form, a team of U.S. collegiate hockey players toppled the mighty Soviets, Eric Heiden's tree-trunk legs powered him to five speedskating gold medals, and...

CANDIDATES for sainthood will be exonerated from the requirement to have performed a miracle under guidelines being considered by the Pope. Already under fire from some Roman Catholics for running a “saint factory”, the Pope is preparing to overturn a centuries-old rule that candidates for canonisation must have performed “medically inexplicable” posthumous miracles. The Pope, 84, has created 482 saints in his 26 years as pontiff — more than all his predecessors put together — and has beatified 1,337 people. He believes that “latter-day saints” offer a much-needed example at a time when Christianity is under threat from secularism and...
