There are today eight living Muskogean languages, Alabama, Apalachee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Florida Seminole, Koasati, Miccosukee and Oklahoma Muskogee (Mvskoke). In the past, there were at least seven more Muskogean languages, but they are now extinct. Ironically, of all these surviving Muskogean languages, Muskogee is the most aberrant. In plain English, that means that Muskogee, the language for which the Muskogean Language Family was named, is the least similar to the other languages. The origin of Muskogee’s uniqueness is a Sherlock Holmes mystery that has yet to be solved.

A Miccosukee tribal member owes back taxes on gambling revenue, a federal appeals ruled Monday in a decision that experts believe could pave the way for the federal government to collect more than $1 billion in overdue personal income taxes. A Miami lawyer accused of lying about whether the Miccosukee Tribe paid him millions in defense fees is trying to remove the judge on the case, saying a comment the jurist made about both sides passing “the peace pipe’’ shows he is biased. Attorney Michael Tein, who was threatened with being held in contempt by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Ronald Dresnick during a courtroom clash last week, said he and his law partner fear they and their clients cannot receive “fair and impartial treatment” in the fatal car crash case. MICCOSUKEE TRIBE INDIAN RESERVATION, Fla. (AP) -- A man who jumped into a lake to flee police was killed by an alligator more than 9-feet long, officials said Tuesday. The man, whose name has not been released, was allegedly burglarizing a vehicle in the parking lot of the Miccosukee Resort and Convention Center on Thursday.
