Each year, based on age and law and international convention, old copyrights expire and once protected works fall into the public domain. Animal Crackers, the second major motion picture to feature the Marx brothers, disappeared for nearly a quarter of a century, and parts of it were nearly forgotten for 86 years, and today it belongs to the public. If Groucho was the witty Marx Brother, Harpo was without a doubt the wild one. His persona of the silent lunatic who runs around wreaking havoc is one of the most instantly recognizable characters in movie history. But just who was the man behind the character? The answer to that is much different than people realize. Transcript of 15 minute video available.

Today is the 122nd birthday of Herbert Manfred Marx (February 25, 1901 – November 30, 1979), commonly known as Zeppo. He was the youngest of the Marx Brothers, appeared on stage after older brother Gummo was drafted, and appeared on stage and in the first five Marx Brothers films.Zeppo was an essential part of the act. If you don't believe me, check out the letter scene from Animal Crackers. Only Zeppo could have pulled it off. It took a Marx Brotehr to do that to Groucho. Harpo didn't talk and if it had been Chico, it would hve descended into...

Here's a 29 minute 57 second video of the Shindig Halloween Show from 1965. The only copy available available has a missing five minute segment that had four cut songs including Boris Karloff singing The Monster Mash! The missing audio segment was recorded by Lionelatwill in 1965, when he was only a kid, (a smart kid) and those missing minutes were edited in to the video from the 13:17 to 19:15 section. I edited some of the show's other video clips and then synched to Lionelatwil's audio. Here's the closest thing to the complete episode available. Enjoy the blast from...

Can't figure out today's Kentucky Derby? This might help. (Sorry about the quality.)

A bit of humor for this hour and I think Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo would approve of the notion that even in trying times, a little laughter goes a long way. From one of the funniest movies ever produced:"We're Going to War!" from Duck Soup "They got guns, We got guns, All God's chillun got guns! I'm gonna walk all over the battlefield, 'Cause all God's chillun got guns!"

Regardless of who wins today, a little levity is greatly needed. So I present to you President Rufus T. Firefly!

From National Review Online comes this week’s smile-quietly-to-yourself schadenfreude moment. It’s obviously a set-up, but I have to admit, it’s a beaut: Slate magazine is just one of the countless media outlets convulsing with St. Vitus’ Dance over that demonic succubus Sarah Palin. In its reader forum, The Fray, one supposed Palinophobe took dead aim at the former Alaska governor’s writing chops...

Zeppo Marx as Horatio Jamison in the 1930 Marx Brothers Film Animal Crackers. As usual, Zeppo plays straight man to his brother Groucho.Growing up in the pre-cable TV era, our choices of programming were quite limited and local television stations had to rely on old movies and reruns due to the high cost of producing original broadcasting. Even though our selection was limited it was a blessing in disguise. Other than TCM buffs (like myself) and the annual Christmas showings of It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol (the one starring Alistair Sim is the best, by the way),...

Does anyone know the name of the Marx Brothers movie in which Chico gives a dazzling display of comic pianistic virtuosity. He does that thing where he hits the high notes with his finger pointed like a gun. ALso, later, Harpo performs the same tune on the harp. I don't know the name of the tune, and since I can't remember the name of the movie (maybe Horsefeathers, where where Groucho is a college president), I don't have much other information to offer. I want to show those clips to my young daughter, who is showing interest in the piano....
