“I am also happy that the suspected shooter is dead.” With those 10 words, in response to Friday’s apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre sent Canada’s propriety police into one of its trademarked tizzies. “Leaders don’t celebrate death,” Harden said of Poilievre’s remark. “We work for community safety.” An “insane thing to say,” was left-wing commentator David Moscrop’s reaction. Former Alberta MLA Thomas Lukazkuk called it “irrational” — “revenge over due process.” “While others appeal for calm, Poilievre rejoices in retribution,” Globe and Mail columnist Andrew Coyne observed on X. [Poilievre] says things...

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The African National Congress party lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result Saturday that puts South Africa on a new political path for the first time since the end of the apartheid system of white minority rule 30 years ago. With more than 99% of votes counted, the once-dominant ANC had received just over 40% in Wednesday’s election, well short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that ended apartheid and brought it to power under Nelson Mandela. The final results are still to be formally declared by the...

And actually, we’d probably be better off with a Democrat-controlled Congress and an actual GOP opposition than whatever this is.If the House GOP loses its majority next year, it might well be because Speaker Mike Johnson sold out Republican voters by failing to fund border security while working with Democrats to funnel billions more taxpayer dollars to Ukraine — after he repeatedly said he wouldn’t do precisely that. Of course, it won’t take much to lose the Republican majority, which will narrow to 217-213 once Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., retires later this month. (Gallagher, whose last day was set for...

It was the announcement Senate Democrats were dreading. When it came, it appeared to strike a major blow to their hopes of holding their razor-thin Senate majority in the 2024 elections. "I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate," Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced earlier this month. Manchin, a moderate Democrat and former governor, won over 60% of the vote in his 2012 re-election, but his margin of victory fell to just three points in 2018. The consensus was...

Do you think this will change some minds in your conference?”

Half of the likely voters in the United States said they disapprove of the Democrat-led $1.7 trillion, 4,155-page omnibus spending bill that was rammed through Congress last month to fund the government.
