WASHINGTON - The increase in the number of people without health insurance has occurred largely because of illegal immigration, a study found. Researchers at the RAND Corporation, a nonpartisan think tank, analyzed data received from about 2,400 people in Los Angeles County in 2000 and 2001, and applied that information to the nation's undocumented population at large. The number of uninsured adults in the United States grew by about 8.7 million between 1980 and 2000. If the trend for Los Angeles County held true for the rest of the country, about a third of that growth can be attributable to...

Lost teeth linked to dementia By Fiona Govan (Filed: 20/06/2005) Losing teeth at a young age could be an early warning of Alzheimer's in later life, research suggests. A study of identical twins has found a strong link between gum disease marked by teeth loss and the brain disease. Scientists believe early exposure to inflammation, which can accompany gum disease, quadruples the risk of developing the disease in old age. However, inherited genes for Alzheimer's are a much bigger risk factor. Researchers from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, used a Swedish registry of twins to identify 109 "discordant"...

He refused to divulge any other details of the earlier investigation. But a relative said a detective asked a family friend during the search, "Do you know...

TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" has been cited by a report as the cause of an upsurge last year in Canadian anti-Semitic attacks, now running at a record pace. The League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith, releasing its 2004 audit of anti-Semitic attacks in Canada, said last year's media coverage of Gibson's film and its alleged depiction of Jews as the "Christ killer" led to an often violent spike in attacks against the Canadian Jewish community. "Whereas only nine incidents in 2003 had religious connotations to the story of Jesus' death, there were...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The breast cancer rate is rising among women in Singapore and appears to be approaching that seen in Europe, researchers report. "In the year 2015, one out of every 10 women is likely to develop breast cancer in her lifetime." Chia, at the National University of Singapore, and colleagues came to this conclusion after comparing data for...

Sacramento -- An obscure political committee funded by some of state Sen. Don Perata's top donors paid money to people under scrutiny by federal authorities for their financial ties to the Oakland lawmaker. Concerned Citizens for California took in the bulk of its money from three donors who gave $25,000 each. The fund then spent most of its money paying close associates of Perata, D-Oakland. Timothy G. Staples, Perata's college roommate, was paid $33,000 by the committee for what was described on state filings as campaign consulting and is owed another $12,000. Staples, through a company he owns, has paid...

Bisexual Viking Linked to Seahenge By Jennifer Viegas, Discovery NewsStatue Of Odin Aug. 27, 2004 — An ancient wooden carving of the bisexual Viking god Odin suggests the prehistoric timber circle monument Seahenge and another, even older, structure might have included totem pole-like carvings, according to archaeologists who have excavated the over 4,000-year-old British wood monuments. Because Odin was a mythological figure in prehistoric religion, the possible link between the carving and the monuments could mean that the mysterious circles held religious, funerary, or magical significance for the late Neolithic people who constructed them on Holme beach in Norfolk, England....
