TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" has been cited by a report as the cause of an upsurge last year in Canadian anti-Semitic attacks, now running at a record pace.
The League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith, releasing its 2004 audit of anti-Semitic attacks in Canada, said last year's media coverage of Gibson's film and its alleged depiction of Jews as the "Christ killer" led to an often violent spike in attacks against the Canadian Jewish community.
"Whereas only nine incidents in 2003 had religious connotations to the story of Jesus' death, there were 32 such incidents in 2004, nine of them in February when the movie opened and a further 15 in the three months following its release," the B'nai Brith study said when published Tuesday.
In a statement, B'nai Brith Canada vp Frank Dimant said incidents of anti-Semitism last year reached an all-time high and were becoming more violent.
The B'nai Brith audit cited instances last year in which a Montreal caller to a Jewish organization exclaimed, "We don't need Mel Gibson's film to hate you!"; a synagogue in Thornhill, Ontario, was defaced with crosses; and a minister on a local Toronto TV channel alleged there was a "Jewish plot for world control."
"The Passion of the Christ" was released in Canada by Seville Pictures.
What a bunch of B.S. Attacks on Jews in Canada, specifically in the Toronto and Montreal area are committed by muslims, who don't hold any religious regards for Christ.
Now how do they figure that "The Passion" was responsible? Did the perps tell them that or is this speculation?
So a year after the movie is released to overwhelming praise (and the left's dismay that there were not widespread attacks on Jews), the left has been able to find a handful of anti-Semitic incidentsa and blame them on Gibson. Pathetic.
In fact, if anyone is being attacked in Canada, it's Christians, who are attacked daily by left wing media and other leftist anti- Christ groups.
No attacks [hello?] on the [yaa-aah!] Italians?
They are Christians, aren't they?
Whether the attacks on Jews are done because of the film isn't really the issue. Films are NOT TO BLAME for behavior. People do what they do and nothing is going to stop them.
Films and books may trigger the POTENTIAL of some behavior but those films and books shouldn't be banned or scorned outright unless their purpose is to deliberately incite that behavior. Films can be anti-anyone and anything, as that is freedom of expression, as long as those films don't incite or promote violent behavior.
This was not Gibson's purpose and everyone on the planet knows that. This is just more anti-Christian, anti-Gibson poison.
This film will be a yearly event. And I'm afraid the Jesus bashing and anti-Christianity poison will be a yearly event as well.
Oh, come now: don't you know that the Muslims hold the attempt to kill 'the Prophet Issa (pbuh)' against the Jews (they have some wild legend about the Jews and Pilate getting confused and crucifying someone they confused with Jesus in his place (and no I don't think his name was Brian).) The Muslims are quite capable of using almost every aspect of "Christ killer' anti-semitic propaganda (except the charge of deicide) as a basis for hatred, and quite consistent with their own religion in so doing, since trying to kill a prophet means rejecting his message (which is retrospectively equivalent to rejecting Islam in their view).
What a crock. Try Islamofascist and neo-nazi's.
Of course not. Jesus was Italian. Just ask any old lady in my neighborhood.
An uptick of nine in a year in a country the size of Canada? The anti-Semitic caller couldn't recall the name of Mel Gibson's movie? Incidents in Canada but nowhere else? Total propaganda nonsense.
My family is heavily involved in Bnai Brith, and they've always been unhappy about my reasons for refusing to join any of the groups, or to donate any money to their funds or causes.
This is part of the reason why.

You know as well as [hello?] I do, those Italian ladies all secretly favor Mother Mary over her kid.
Good for you! You see any Italians around? I'm so mad at them, I'm [ya...aaah!] looking for revenge! /s
There's no Italian blood in me today. I'm all Irish. The Italian blood is on [hello?] holiday.
So they are gust blowing smoke.
