Democrats in Louisiana have caved to the political correctness of the modern age, just like Democrats in several other states have already done, suggests a prominent historian. The Louisiana Democratic Party has announced its annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner will no longer bear the names of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson; this year’s event, set to be held in New Orleans on Aug. 26, will instead be called the True Blue Gala. The Louisiana Democratic Party and its chairwoman, state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, announced the dinner would be renamed “to reflect the progress of the party and the changing times.” Jefferson,...

Since Dejuan Guillory died in an officer-involved shooting, questions have swirled about his criminal record. In August 2015, he was arrested and accused of using a backhoe to steal an ATM from a bank, and of shooting at a police officer who came to investigate. In December 2016, he pleaded no contest to simple criminal damage to property and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Half of that sentence was suspended, leaving a five-year sentence to serve, followed by five years of probation. Evangeline Parish court records show that the five-year sentence was actually deferred.

The military veteran who killed three law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge last summer left behind a suicide note, a prayer from an Islamic holy book and an online trail of his rage against police. Two days after a white police officer shot and killed a black man in Louisiana’s capital, Gavin Long searched the internet for addresses, phone numbers and other personal information belonging to the two officers involved in the July 5 shooting of Alton Sterling, a prosecutor’s report revealed Friday. Less than two weeks later, the 29-year-old black man from Kansas City, Mo., traveled to Baton Rouge...

Republican Iowa Rep. Steve King found himself accused of using his white privilege last week after he offered statistics that Democratic Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond didn’t like. It all started at a House Judiciary Committee hearing where King brought up the high-crime rates of Central American nations that many immigrants hail from. King called the violence of countries like El Salvador shocking, but then pointed out that some cities in the U.S. have comparable murder rates. “That shocking number in El Salvador, that 93.09 violent deaths per 100,000 — shocking until I looked up the data that was delivered to...

That Louisiana is sinking into the Gulf of Mexico is not news. Rising seas and coastline erosion have been working together for decades, but this sinking may well be happening faster than previously thought—threatening billions and billions of Louisiana oil infrastructure. This is the central idea of a new study from Tulane University that set out to map the Louisiana coastline using new methods of measuring subsidence—the technical term for sinking land. The outcome of the measurements is an average 9 mm of wetlands lost to the sea every year. This compares to previous estimates of an annual subsidence rate...
