A California triathlete whose body washed ashore a week after she vanished during a group ocean swim off the Monterey coast was killed in a gruesome shark attack, according to a newly released report. Erica Fox, 55, disappeared in December 2025 while swimming with 14 others in the frigid waters off Monterey. Family members had gathered on the boat to scatter the ashes of a Santa Cruz County woman who died more than 10 years ago. The ashes being scattered were those of Maria Vi Boisa, who was reported missing from Santa Cruz County in May 2015. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office announced on Tuesday that they have identified the remains found in 1995 as those of a missing teen from New York. On March 22, 1995, partial remains were found in a riverbed off Highway 129 east of Rogge Lane. All investigators could determine from DNA testing was that the remains were from an unknown female. Her identity was a mystery for decades before her case was re-examined in 2019 when her remains were sent for more forensic testing, including carbon dating.
