A totally new release of Knoppix was unveiled at LinuxTag 2005, Knoppix 4.0. This is the release that introduces the split between "maxi" DVD and "mini" CD releases. I've tried out the 4.0 DVD and let me tell you, I'm like a kid in a candy store. Note: This DVD is not yet available for download. Klaus often creates a special version of Knoppix for LinuxTag that then gets released to the general public (often with some updates) a few weeks afterward. In the case of Knoppix 4.0 I imagine the DVD being handed out at LinuxTag will be pretty...

Australian company Cybersource says it's currently talking to two domestic banks about providing Linux-based bootable CDs to consumers to ensure Internet banking security. The company yesterday released information about its Online Banking Coastguard solution. Cybersource has included Mozilla Firefox as the sole browser for Internet banking. "We've brought it to the attention of several banks, and are in reasonably serious discussions with two of them," said Rohan Tronson, Cybersource's Coastguard product manager. Although he wouldn't say which companies...

I decide to install it on a partition on my hard drive.I followed the instructions from the Knoppix website and I think I was successfull. The Lilo boot screen shows up gives me a choice of a couple or three versions of Linux and my Windows 98se installation. The 98se partition still boots but when I boot Linux it prompts me for...

The modern PC is a marvel of technology. One of its more useful capabilities is the ability to use the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive as a boot disk. Many Linux distros use this feature to launch their installers, but if you can boot off the CD, why can't you run off the CD? In fact, you can. The cool thing about all this is that you don't have to install anything on your computer. In our other articles this week, we've looked at distros that had to be installed to your hard disk before you could use them. But that's...
