President Donald Trump fired Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, on Thursday. Hayden was informed of the president’s decision through an email from Trent Morse, the deputy director of presidential personnel. “On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately,” the email said. Hayden was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2016 to serve a 10-year term, which was set to expire next year.

There is now a Republican-led effort for the Senate to confirm President Obama’s nomination of Carla Hayden to be the librarian of Congress. Her confirmation hearing proceeded without any serious review of her record, her views, or her qualifications. The American people should be asking why any senator would be anxious to confirm a nominee who is not only unqualified, but whom The Nation magazine celebrated as a “radical librarian” who champions unrestricted access to pornography in public libraries. 7 Things I Want to Say to That Guy Watching Porn at the Library Other members of Congress should be asking why...

Major AI service providers continue to deploy content moderation algorithms designed to suppress and manipulate viewpoints, actively enforcing censorship under the guise of moderation. From Foreign PsyOps to Domestic Thought Control The censorship and content manipulation we see today did not emerge organically—it was the result of government-directed psychological operations (PsyOps) repurposed for domestic control. What was once used in foreign influence campaigns to destabilize adversarial regimes or control narratives abroad was turned inward—against the American people. The Twitter Files, exposed by investigative journalists Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger, provided irrefutable evidence that U.S. government agencies used taxpayer dollars to...

On this date in 1943, a special transport of 1,196 children and 53 adults arrived at Auschwitz and were gassed shortly thereafter. Thus ended one of the lesser-known tragedies of the Holocaust. The children were very nearly the last survivors of the Bialystok Ghetto, which had been liquidated in August 1943. Almost all of the inhabitants of the ghetto wound up being sent to the Treblinka Extermination Camp and killed, but over a thousand children were mysteriously separated from their parents and taken away for some as-yet-unknown purpose. (The transport list can be found here.) At the time, there were...

Freshman [Representative] Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will grace the front page of the April 1 [2019] edition of Time Magazine...The Bronx-native, who shook the Democratic establishment by defeating longtime congressman Joe Crowly in 2018, appears in a headshot taken by photographer Collier Schorr next to the headline: “The Phenom.” The story accompanying the front page, written by Charolette Alter, describes Ocasio-Cortez as “the second-most talked about politician in America...

Currently, Topics are tied individual Forums, such that the 50 states (but not DC) show up as Topics for a thread posted in or moved to the GOP forum -- but the 50 states (and DC) show up as "US:(state name)" in threads posted in or moved to the News forum. Those state lists don't cross. Same goes for the duplicate Topics found in Chat and Blogger forums -- and those lists are all separate from one another. Keywords are available across all Forums. All three systems should be merged into a Tags system. Currently, the URL (which I still...

Just throwing out an idea based on an observation. In all my years on FR, watching the duplicate threads show up, and the users insisting they searched for existing articles. I believe them. The problem lies in the default searching option in my view. Change it from keywords to title. The title search is vastly more useful and is what I use to detect duplicate articles, and I suspect the same to many of those that enjoy pointing them out. In my observation, many duplicate articles are a result of inaccurate or incomplete keyword lists that don't quite literally have...

Yesterday there was a post regarding questions to ask global warming nuts. I have done a search but can't find it. Can anyone help. Thanks in advance and sorry for my lack of search skills. I have to do some work and I'll be back to check later.

Early voting is a new phenomenon that is has great implications on the final election outcome. Despite this, I don’t much enjoy blogging it. The numbers get updated sporadically, there is an inherent uncertainty in what the requests or submissions actually mean and the sample sizes are really small. This makes drawing conclusions not much better than just plain old guess work until a critical mass of votes have accumulated. And by that time someone else has already done a better job analyzing the data than I could so I just leave it to them. One of the only reasons...

First of all, before anyone gets upset, this thread is not a complaint, not a critique. FR works fine for me. I'm a happy camper. But I am curious as to how others navigate around the site, and what, if any tweaks might be worth considering; and maybe provide some food for thought for the folks in charge.

Good morning and happy June to my gardening FRiends and fellow gardeners! You may have noticed that I titled last week's thread "Keywords", and then totally forgot to write the first word about the topic. That illustrates perfectly how frazzled my mind is these days. As I was getting ready to hit the post button, I kept thinking there was something I was forgetting, but finally convinced myself that it probably wasn't *that* important, and I posted the thread. I apologize. There has been more than once that great information has been posted by one of our members, but I can't...

Have you ever wondered if the government — or more specifically, the Department of Homeland Security — is monitoring your Twitter or Facebook posts? If the answer's "yes," give yourself a pat on the back because you're right and not simply paranoid. There's even a list of keywords for which subcontractors hired by the DHS check social networks. (Snip) Technically this monitoring is not done by the DHS, but subcontractors who are specifically hired to "monitor social networks–use to generate real-time IOI reports," of course. Internal policies demand that those reports are stripped of most personally identifiable information (PII), though

Seems like after the crash yesterday the "Popular Keywords" all changed in the top right of the screen and were replaced with some that are completely bogus such as "tothemanorborn"???? I use this handy feature to quickly get to groups of tagged articles. Some of the missing ones that have been there for years are "palin" and "sarahpalin", santorum is new, and some of the others but a few old good ones like "banglist" are still there. Weird...

A reminder of how FR's formating procedure can make your search for numerous posted articles about Herman Cain easier. 1. At the top of the "Forum" page, enter "Cain" in the keyword search function. A list of articles with that keyword appears. 2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the link "Add to My Page" 3. Click the link and "My Page Layout" appears. 4. Chose the position (weight) on the sidebar where articles about Cain are to appear. 5. Chose the number (size) of article titles that will appear in that block. 6. Click "Modify" to...

O.K. I admit it. I'm a big fan of Sarah, especially after her appearance on Hannity last night. So when I'm away from the computer for awhile and want to see if there are new threads about her, I have always clicked "Keyword: Palin" in the "Popular Keywords" sidebar block.Well, I have decided to configure my sidebar to display the ten most recent threads about her. It took a bit of head scratching about how to do it, so when I figured it out, I decided to share the really easy but somewhat obscure (for a dunce like me) procedure....

I always run into this one: Does anyone know how to search FR posts containing TSA, DoD, DoJ, SoS or DHS in their titles?
