The videotape was a key piece of evidence for the prosecution against Bentley, who is facing two second-degree sexual abuse cases. His brother, Roger Bentley, was convicted earlier this year of kidnapping, sexually abusing and murdering Gage on March 24, 2005. An attorney for James Bentley, 34, of Vinton, has said...

Evidence Suggests Bentley Dabbled in OccultFriday, February 03, 2006, 10:53:11 AM By Josh Hinkle KCRG-TV9 News VIDEO (Cedar Rapids - KCRG) -- There are strange questions about the man found guilty in the murder of Jeseta Gage. But evidence still lingers concerning Roger Bentley, suggesting ties to the occult. KCRG-TV9 News has proof that those ties go back more than a decade. One piece of evidence that caught the victim's family off guard was the "Necromantic Ritual Book." Among other things, this book details the practice of using corpses to rause the spirit of the dead. The high profile murder cases involving the deaths of two little girls Jetseta Gage and Evelyn Miller, prompted Channel 13 to spend two months looking into their cases. Both had active files with the DHS at the time of their deaths. That investigation turned up information about how the Department of Human Services handled their cases, but we also found a federal report exposing some flaws in Iowa's system to prevent abuse. Megan Kanka, Jessica Lunsford, Shasta Groene. These girls, all believed to be sexually molested by men and two of them killed, have generated headlines, prompted states to stiffen penalties against offenders and caused many parents to fear their child could be next.Yet gut-wrenching as these high-profile cases are, they don't tell the whole story of sex offenders in America. They don't reflect the surprisingly good news: Sex crimes against children have dropped dramatically in the last decade. An online national sex-offender registry was launched in July. And recent research shows doctors can better predict which offenders may strike again. "There's a...

IOWA CITY(AP) --- A judge ruled Tuesday that the trial for a man charged in the death of Jetseta Gage would be moved from Johnson County to Scott County. District Court Judge Patrick Grady set Scott County as the site for Roger Bentley's trial after agreeing to a defense motion last month that the trial should not be in Johnson County. Attorneys for Bentley, charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping, had argued that their client could not get a fair trial in Johnson County because of the intense media coverage the case generated. Bentley, 38, of Brandon, is accused...

DES MOINES -- Republican leaders in the Iowa Senate demanded a vote on reinstatement of the death penalty Tuesday and turned up the political heat on a top Democrat who has vowed to block any debate on the issue. But Democrats fired back, accusing the GOP's leading death penalty proponent, Sen. Larry McKibben, Marshalltown, of flip-flopping on the issue. They distributed a 2004 voter guide created by the Iowa Catholic Conference listing McKibben as a supporter of "maintaining Iowa's status as a no death penalty state." The voter guide was compiled from questionnaires filled out by McKibben and other legislative...
