Bentley charged with murder

CEDAR RAPIDS — O n a warm spring evening like Monday’s, Leo Williams could easily imagine his three young sons running and playing with Jetseta Gage. ‘‘They would probably do what normal kids would do,’’ Williams said. ‘‘Even for those kids, I don’t think it’ll be the same.’’ Williams, of Cedar Rapids, was one of dozens of friends and relatives of 10-year-old Jetseta who gathered at the M urdoch-Linwood Funeral Home to remember the girl, abducted from her home last Thursday. ‘‘She was a loving, bubbly little 10-year-old girl,’’ said Williams, whose wife is the cousin of Jetseta’s mother. ‘‘The kind of girl, you’d meet her once and you just liked her.’’ Williams said his family spent holidays and summer picnics with the Gages, but he’d never met Roger Paul Bentley, 37, of Brandon, charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping, or Bentley’s brother, James Bentley, 33, of Vinton, held in the Linn County Jail on a charge of sexually abusing Jetseta over the course of two years.

Bentley, now 37, refused treatment in the state’s sex offender treatment program during the 23 months he spent in the Mount Pleasant prison after being sentenced on lascivious acts with a 7-year-old girl.
Once Bentley completed his sentence, he was released in 1997 without any additional supervision.

refused treatment

I think treatment should be mandatory, but I would allow the offender to choose which caliber the treatment would be delivered in.

Two sentences that paint a terribly incriminating picture of our "justice" system. It's become painfully clear that there is no rehabilitating sex offenders, and they need to be confined forever.

I think the mom should bear much of the blame also. Hanging around with these wierdos and having her children around them. She's known them for years so to say she didn't know about the pedophilia I don't think is true. She left this weirdo there working on her car with the kids there. She wasn't there to supervise.

"Trena Gage said she met Bentley through his younger brother James, whom she had dated about five years ago.

James Bentley, 33, is in the Linn County jail awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree sexual abuse. Police have also confirmed that Jetseta was the abuse victim in the case against James Bentley."

I think that poor Jetseta's mother shares some culpability in this horror, considering the fact that she invited this molester into her home, having previously dated his brother who also molested Jetseta.

That might have been funny, if not for the story below the headline.

The mother actually named her daughter "Jetseta?"
("Jet-setter?")

For a few seconds there, I thought that they had finally charged a car for murder.
