Hereditary, recurring governor Jerry Brown, 85, wants California’s supreme court to remove from the November ballot a measure that would give the people final say on tax hikes. That invites a look at Brown’s past dealings with the state’s high court. In 1977, Brown’s choice for chief justice was Rose Bird, 40 years old and without judicial experience. In 10 years as California’s chief justice, Bird heard 64 capital cases and never voted to uphold a death sentence. For staunch death-penalty opponents, even those on the court, it defied belief to think that every case was unfounded. Consider, for example,...

After watching the vote to censure Talib (successful BTW), I just happened to notice a very short, wobbling, awkward looking gent walk across the full field of view of the camera. Yup, it was none other than Jerry Nadler! The odd comedy of that scene was somewhat delightful to watch, but what was more impressive was the shock that not one, NOT ONE of the 15-18 people that Jerry directly passed by acknowledged him. He was utterly ignored. He might as well have been invisible! What the heck did he do to get this kind of cold shoulder treatment?

NEW YORK (AP) — Geraldo Rivera has quit as one of the lonely liberal voices on Fox News’ popular political combat show “The Five,” saying Wednesday that “a growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences” made it no longer worth it to him. The last scheduled appearance on “The Five” for the television veteran, whose 80th birthday is on July 4, is next week. “It has been a rocky ride but it has also been an exhilarating adventure that spanned quite a few years,” he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday. “I hope it’s not my...

Geraldo Rivera on Thursday announced his appearances on Fox’s “The Five” have been canceled. “My appearances today and tomorrow on The Five have been canceled. I’m sure there’s a good reason. Never fear, I’ll be back week after next. Stay safe and happy. Thanks 🙏” Geraldo said. Geraldo last week attacked Tucker Carlson after the top-rated Fox host was ousted. “I don’t wish ill on anybody, but there is no doubt-as I said at the time-Tucker Carlson’s perverse January 6 conspiracy theory was “bullshit.”” Geraldo said. “Having lost the election President Trump incited an insurrection that sought to undermine our...

Failed presidential candidate John Kerry has urged King Charles III to attend the United Nations COP27 climate change conference in Egypt after it was revealed that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will not travel to the meeting because he is too busy. John Kerry, who serves as President Joe Biden’s special envoy on climate change on the international stage, has said that it would be “very powerful” if King Charles joins the globalist meeting in Sharm el Sheikh next month to help push the green agenda in light of the British Monarch’s vocal history on the issue.

WILLIAMS, Calif. (AP) — Former California Gov. Jerry Brown is living off the grid in retirement, but he’s still deeply connected on two issues that captivated him while in office and now are center stage globally: climate change and the threat of nuclear war. The 83-year-old Brown, who left office in 2019, serves as executive chairman of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which sets the Doomsday Clock measuring how close humanity is to self-destruction. He’s also on the board of the Nuclear Threat Initiative. In an interview with The Associated Press, Brown commended President Joe Biden for not raising...

Foreign governments concerned about climate change may soon be spending more time dealing with Sacramento than Washington. President-elect Donald J. Trump has packed his cabinet with nominees who dispute the science of global warming. He has signaled he will withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. He has belittled the notion of global warming and attacked policies intended to combat it. But California — a state that has for 50 years been a leader in environmental advocacy — is about to step unto the breach. In a show of defiance, Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, and legislative leaders...
  • LAO: California can weather a mild recession. But Trump? TBD

    11/17/2016 2:06:03 PM PST · by ChicagoConservative27 · 7 replies
In issuing its annual survey of state finances, the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office has affirmed the wisdom of Gov. Jerry Brown’s push for Proposition 2, the 2014 ballot measure that amended the California Constitution to create a sizable rainy-day fund and set aside money when revenue is free-flowing for use when it dries up. The LAO estimates that if California’s economy continues its modest growth and new spending commitments are not made, the state will end the 2017-18 fiscal year with $11.5 billion in total reserves. Of that amount, $8.7 billion can be used only for future budget emergencies. The...
  • Gov. Jerry Brown sells his Oakland home for a loss

    08/02/2016 2:51:09 PM PDT · by ChicagoConservative27 · 14 replies
Gov. Jerry Brown is no longer an Oakland homeowner. The governor and First Lady Anne Gust Brown closed on the sale of their Oakland Hills home last week, completing the journey that began late last year when the first couple moved into the historic governor's mansion in Sacramento. The real estate website Curbed San Francisco reported on Monday that the 4,147-square-foot home closed on July 30 with a sale price of $2.375 million. That's less than the Browns were asking for the home when it went on the market in April, and also slightly less than they reportedly paid for...
  • Babylon 5 Creator J. Michael Straczynski On the Death of Jerry Doyle (Epic Times founder)

When it came to politics, Jerry Doyle and I disagreed on, well, pretty much everything. Politically, Jerry was just to the right of Attila the Hun. There is a line in Babylon 5 where his character, Michael Garibaldi, suggests that the way to deal with crime is to go from electric chairs to electric bleachers. That line is quintessential Jerry Doyle. I say this with confidence because I overheard him saying it at lunch then stole it for the show. Despite our differences, when Jerry ran for congress as a Republican not long after Babylon 5 ended, I donated to...
  • Success of Jerry Brown, and California, Offers Lesson to National Democrats

SACRAMENTO — When Bernie Sanders held a rally at an outdoor stadium here the other night, more than 15,000 people turned out in a display of cheering, chanting, singing and cartwheels. Gov. Jerry Brown, the state’s most prominent Democrat, was not there, but he might as well have been. Mr. Sanders’s speech was replete with the kind of to-the-barricades flourishes that have long been part of Mr. Brown’s campaign language. “The political establishment is getting nervous,” Mr. Sanders said. “The corporate establishment is getting nervous. And they should be nervous. Because real change is coming.” As the Democratic presidential primary...
  • Gov. Jerry Brown's sledgehammer fix to California's housing crisis

    05/27/2016 8:40:53 AM PDT · by ChicagoConservative27 · 24 replies
Gov. Jerry Brown’s solution to California’s affordable housing crisis is to build, build, build, and not let local politics get in the way. Earlier this month, the governor introduced a bill under which proposed urban housing developments that meet local zoning requirements and reserve some portion of their units for low-income residents would be exempted from any additional environmental or local government review. The governor’s theory is that neighborhood opponents and other parochial interests have consistently blocked or downsized badly needed development projects, leading to a housing crisis in which California's major cities are increasingly unaffordable for most of its...
  • Gov. Jerry Brown's new budget must answer some tough questions

    05/13/2016 8:42:36 AM PDT · by ChicagoConservative27 · 9 replies
Every May, governors revise their state budget plans and send a final proposal to the Legislature, a process that's designed to ensure that lawmakers use the most current information on the economy and tax revenues. And it's the economy that will likely take center stage in Friday morning's unveiling of Gov. Jerry Brown's new budget. Revenues collected from personal income taxes missed their target in April by about $1 billion, according to one preliminary analysis. At the same time, Democrats in the Legislature have urged Brown to do more to fund programs for struggling California families . How the governor...
  • Jerry Brown raises California smoking age to 21, tightens vaping rules

    05/05/2016 11:11:45 AM PDT · by ChicagoConservative27 · 25 replies
Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday enacted California’s most significant new tobacco regulations in decades, signing laws that will place tight restrictions on use of the increasingly popular e-cigarette and make California the second state to raise its smoking age to 21. Brown signed five closely watched bills, which will also expand smoking restrictions in the workplace and on school properties. California now joins jurisdictions like Hawaii, New York City and San Francisco that have bumped the tobacco-buying age to 21 in an effort to block young people’s route to obtaining tobacco. But Brown vetoed one measure that would have allowed...
  • Patterson, Declining to Run for Commission, Knocks Trump (in 2014 he knocked Nativist Axis) (TX)

Former Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson is not running for state railroad commissioner, and he suggests that Donald Trump has something to do with that. Patterson was one of several high-profile Republicans flirting late last week with a bid for David Porter’s open seat on the three-member Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates oil and gas production. But he removed himself from that discussion on Monday, saying he “has better things to do,” in a statement that also expressed disdain for Trump’s presidential ambitions.

California Gov. Jerry Brown had some sharp words for environmentalist critics of his proposed Sacramento River water tunnels. On Wednesday, Brown told critics of his $15 billion plan to “shut up, because you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about,” according to the AP. Brown’s office told Sacramento Bee blog Capitol Alert that the governor’s remarks were made in “jest.” But the sharp rebuke highlights the tension surrounding the pricey project, which would send water from the northern part of the state south by using a pair of underground water tunnels to divert water around the Sacramento-San Joaquin River...

With the new year comes new insane laws from California, making it officially America's Sanctuary State -- treating illegal aliens who broke the law to enter the U.S. as well as law-abiding citizens, protecting illegals from deportation, and putting public safety at grave risk. In October, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D), signed eight bills handing special rights to illegal aliens. The controversial legislation includes allowing illegal alien obtain driver's licenses, preventing employers from denying jobs based on "immigration status", and barring state and local law enforcement from detaining illegal aliens when directed by ICE, DHS or Border Patrol. The legislation claims that...
