New England Journal of Medicine ^ | 5/22/20 | Various Doctors
BACKGROUND Although several therapeutic agents have been evaluated for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), none have yet been shown to be efficacious. METHODS We conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of intravenous remdesivir in adults hospitalized with Covid-19 with evidence of lower respiratory tract involvement. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either remdesivir (200 mg loading dose on day 1, followed by 100 mg daily for up to 9 additional days) or placebo for up to 10 days. The primary outcome was the time to recovery, defined by either discharge from the hospital or hospitalization for infection-control purposes...

On a day when we all remember Eddie Haskell (Ken Osmond, RIP), out comes Nancy Pelosi with her sudden and newfound 'concerns' for President Trump's health:   “I would rather he not be taking something that has not been approved by the scientists, especially in his age group, and in his, shall we say, weight group: ‘Morbidly obese,’ they say,” says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Pres. Trump’s revelation he is taking hydroxychloroquine. pic.twitter.com/0ImjpEjg9q — Anderson Cooper 360° (@AC360) May 19, 2020   Which has about as much authencity as a botox-frozen forehead or a three-trillion-dollar bill. After all, haven't Democrats been...

A preliminary study done by New York's Grossman School of Medicine reports on the use of HCQ+AZT+Zinc versus HCQ+AZT alone in four New York Hospitals has issued its report. Here's the key finding of the abstract. Zinc sulfate increased the frequency of patients being discharged home, and decreased the need for ventilation, admission to the ICU, and mortality or transfer to hospice for patients who were never admitted to the ICU.  After adjusting for the time at which zinc sulfate was added to our protocol, an increased frequency of being discharged home (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.12-2.09) reduction in mortality...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Right now, there’s no one drug proven to cure COVID-19, but President Donald Trump has touted hydroxychloroquine, a drug used to ease the symptoms of certain autoimmune diseases. Some COVID-19 patients have reported using the drug, with mixed results. One of those patients is Eli Hume. “I was scared to death," Hume said. “I literally thought, ‘oh crap, I might not make it out of here.’” Hume contracted COVID-19 in March. After a few days of a high-grade fever, he was admitted into Norton Brownsboro Hospital. For two weeks, the 46-year-old, previously healthy former firefighter battled...

Thirty residents of a Texas City, Texas nursing home are being treated for the coronavirus with hydroxychloroquine. The nursing home houses one of the largest outbreaks in the Houston area. Out of more than 100 coronavirus tests that were administered to residents and staff at the Resort at Texas City, a nursing home, 83 tested positive for COVID-19. There are 135 beds in this facility in Galveston County. A staff member became ill with the coronavirus and that prompted the mass testing. Now 30 residents are being given hydroxychloroquine as treatment. On Monday, Governor Greg Abbott said that the...

Most people do recover from the coronavirus, more than 127,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University, which keeps track of the virus and its spread. Corianne Goldstein, a 32-year-old New Jersey woman who was hospitalized after contracting the virus, is on her way to being one of them. Goldstein, of Matawan, was released from Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel earlier this week and is at home continuing to recover. “It’s nice to be back with my husband and my dogs, just really glad to have somebody who can be next to me for the rest of this journey,” said Goldstein,...

A recent French peer review study by renowned infectious disease specialist Dr. Didier Raoult which was published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents showed promising results in the treatment of COVID-19 with Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). The French study also showed a significant decrease in “viral shedding,” from patients treated with HCQ. The lower the shedding, the less likelihood that the virus can be communicated to other individuals. As the medical profession evaluates different treatment options, public health officials should adopt early treatment measures with the existing tools at our disposal. HCQ is an inexpensive, safe drug that has been used...

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved hydroxychloroquine—a drug used to treat malaria, rheumatic diseases and other conditions—for COVID-19. As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads around the world, scientists are scrambling to identify treatments that may be effective against the disease. Hydroxychloroquine—a common derivative of chloroquine—is among those touted as most promising by some experts. "The nice part is, it's been around for a long time, so we know that if things don't go as planned its not going to kill anybody," Trump told reporters at a press conference. "When you go with a...
