Police in the US state of Georgia have shot and killed an LGBT student activist, leading to an independent investigation. Police encountered Scout Schultz at a campus in Atlanta after a call about "a person with a knife and a gun" late on Saturday, officials say. Footage has emerged apparently showing Schultz, 21, refusing to obey multiple police commands to drop a knife. Schultz's mother said police should not have used lethal force. In a video filmed by fellow students at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Schultz is heard saying "Shoot me!" while continuing to advance on the officers. One...

Letting the facts do the talking seems to be a lost art among university bureaucrats today, at least at Georgia Tech. Honesty takes a back seat to misinformation, distortions of the truth and the assumption that those with opposing views are inherently wrong and deserving of retribution. It doesn't help when some members of the media leave this unchallenged. But now a federal judge has made note of Tech's apparent "lack of candor." In March 2006, the Alliance Defense Fund —- Christian attorneys and like-minded organizations defending the right of people to freely live out their faith —- filed a...

Politically Correct Death Threats at Georgia Tech By Peter Collier FrontPageMagazine.com | March 21, 2007 This past February, while other Georgia Tech students were exchanging flirtatious Valentine?s Day notes, Ruth Malhotra received an anonymous letter whose message was anything but amorous: This Valentine?s Day, you cannot attack gay marriage. It is about love and you are about hate. This Valentine?s Day, you cannot condemn a woman?s choice. It is about love and you are about hate. This Valentine? Day, you cannot protest the Vagina Monologues. It is about love and you are about hate. No, this Valentine?s Day, you will...

The student newspaper refuses an ad from the Terrorism Awareness Project, but gives glowing, free coverage to Islamic Awareness Week Last month, the editorial board of the Technique – the Georgia Tech student Newspaper – rejected an advertisement from the Terrorism Awareness Project entitled, “What Americans Need to Know about Jihad.” In the February 23rd edition, the Technique published a news article with the headline, “Islamic Awareness Week promotes understanding.” The Technique has clearly chosen to promote one particular viewpoint and censor those views not in line with its own unbalanced agenda. The Technique seems to doubt the intellectual ability...

The Alliance Defense Fund, students of Georgia Tech and free speech won a substantial victory in court this week. On Monday, August 14 a court order went into effect that requires Georgia Tech to repeal and replace a speech code which the ADF said is unconstitutional. The order also prohibits the school from changing the code again for a period of five years unless pre-approved by the court. “The First Amendment applies to all students on campus, including religious students and students who hold conservative political beliefs. We are glad that we reached a mutually agreeable settlement with the university...

Atlanta (August 2, 2006) — When it comes to choosing food bowls, you might want to follow Goldilocks’s lead and opt for the baby-bear serving, but not because of the temperature. What makes smaller bowls “just right” for most people is how they help control the urge to over-serve food, says Koert van Ittersum, assistant professor of marketing at Georgia Tech College of Management. Smaller spoons also help stop people from piling on too much food, according to a study conducted by van Ittersum with Brian Wansink of Cornell University and James Painter of Eastern Illinois University. Titled “Ice Cream...

Confronting Academic Liberalism by: Julia A. Seymour, June 16, 2006 One sued her university, another was caricatured in her college newspaper, and the third stood up against school administration and would not back down. Conservative student activists are no longer anomalies, rare individuals who stand up to fight against liberalism on their campuses. The Eagle Forum Summit not only drew student activists, it featured several student speakers who have been waging battles for conservatism in Georgia, Virginia and Utah. Ruth Malhotra spoke first about her experiences at Georgia Tech which included being singled out in class and being threatened with...

It's time for this column to announce its Sheldon Award, given annually to the university president who does the most to look the other way when free speech is under assault on campus. As all Sheldon fans know, the prize is a statuette that looks something like the Oscar, except that the Oscar shows a man with no face looking straight ahead, whereas the Sheldon shows a man with no spine looking the other way. The award is named for Sheldon Hackney, former president of the University of Pennsylvania and a modern legend in looking the other way.College presidents who...
