Eight people were shot at a crowded Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Fort Pierce, Florida, authorities said Monday night. In an echo of claims made following the San Bernardino massacre, a former co-worker of Omar Mateen, the dead suspect in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, says that he complained to Mateen’s employer about the man’s “unhinged” behavior, but the company ignored complaints because Mateen was Muslim. Florida Today reports: A former Fort Pierce police officer who once worked with 29-year-old Omar Mateen, the assailant in an Orlando nightclub shooting that left at least 50 dead, said he was “unhinged and unstable.”

Florida’s Legislature is poised to rein in that state’s out-of-control Home Owner Associations (HOA) and their legal and management firms with proposed bills in both houses of the legislature in Tallahassee. A Florida woman saved herself from being raped after she pulled a razor from her bra and slashed her attacker’s throat. ​ According to the woman, Kenneth Taylor approached her from a store and the two began to chat. As they walked toward an empty lot, Taylor reportedly pushed the woman to the ground and hit her several times in the face. Luckily, the woman managed to pull a razor from her bra and slice Taylor’s throat. When Taylor fled from the scene, the woman called police to the intersection of North 13th Street and Avenue G in Fort Pierce....
