Hundreds of Army aviation officers who were set to leave the military are being held to another three years of service after they say the branch quietly reinterpreted part of their contract amid retention and recruitment issues. The shift has sparked an uproar among the more than 600 affected active-duty commissioned officers, including some who say their plans to start families, launch businesses and begin their civilian lives have been suddenly derailed. “We are now completely in limbo,” said a captain who had scheduled his wedding around thinking he would be leaving the military this spring. That captain and three other...

The strange objects, one of them like a spinning top moving against the wind, appeared almost daily from the summer of 2014 to March 2015, high in the skies over the East Coast. Navy pilots reported to their superiors that the objects had no visible engine or infrared exhaust plumes, but that they could reach 30,000 feet and hypersonic speeds. “These things would be out there all day,” said Lt. Ryan Graves, an F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot who has been with the Navy for 10 years, and who reported his sightings to the Pentagon and Congress. “Keeping an aircraft in...

I almost never do vanity posts but I have seen three movies lately that I want to comment on. I thoroughly enjoyed two of these movies, The Guardian, and Fly Boys, in spite of fact that the professional film critics were generally dismissive of them as being cliché ridden.

(I havn't posted a topic in years so please bear with me.)We finally get a story of good American volunteer-ism, comradeship and adventure without the pacifist claptrap. This is the kind of war movie the public has been asking for for sometime. I'm not a movie expert but it is in the spirit of Howard Hughes's "Hell's Angels", but not as classic. It is done in an acceptable context that schools could use as video material. There is no bad language just the pain and horror of war.I have not read any reviews of the movie, but I can predict...

"The only modern way to describe a World War I dogfight is to imagine a knife fight in a phone booth," says Tony Bill, who directed "Flyboys," which MGM is releasing today. The film tells the tale of the Lafayette Escadrille, a squadron of American pilots who volunteered to fight for France in the early days of World War I.
  • Flyboys - favorable review by Medved (but panned by others)

In Flyboys, young Americans volunteer for the French Air Corps in World War I. And this genuinely thrilling movie makes it look like fun, telling the true story of the famed Lafayette Escadrille that engaged in often-deadly aerial combat just one decade after airplanes were invented. One veteran flyer explains why each pilot gets a revolver: This is a stirring, old-fashioned war movie with vivid characters, involving flyboy James Franco and French farm girl Jennifer Decker. Rated a mild PG-13 for wartime action and brief sex references but suitable for all viewers over ten...

Dogfight sequence here. This scene seems to take CGI to the next level. Very impressive. Have not seen movie and have no connection to it.

George Bush's comrades eaten by their Japanese PoW guards By Charles Laurence in New York (Filed: 26/10/2003) The former President George Bush narrowly escaped being beheaded and eaten by Japanese soldiers when he was shot down over the Pacific in the Second World War, a shocking new history published in America has revealed. The book, Flyboys, is the result of historical detective work by James Bradley, whose father was among the marines later photographed raising the flag over the island of Iwo Jima. Lt George Bush, then a 20-year-old pilot, was among nine airmen who escaped from their planes after...

"Flyboys" is the latest example of how easy it is to be ambushed by mainstream popular culture. This book may have hit best-seller lists, but its popularity is no guarantee of the benign. Think of all the budding book lovers who raced out to read "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," only to be regaled with a gruesome showdown at the end of the story. Think of the audiences who briefly made the hyper-gory "Kill Bill: Vol. 1" the nation's hottest movie, only to discover that it had all the wit of a falling brick. And now look...

Now, in Flyboys, Bradley returns to World War II and an extraordinary-and totally unknown-true story of courage. Over the remote Pacific island of Chichi Jima, nine American flyers-Navy and Marine pilots sent to bomb Japanese communications towers there-were...
