A New York Navyman and an NYU student were happy to oblige The Post’s request to recreate the famed 1945 V-J Day photo from Times Square, during a Fleet Week bash. Brandon O’Connell, a sailor stationed at Chambers Street, showed up ready to mingle at the Fleet Week Open Bar Singles Party Friday night to meet “somebody that would like to have fun.” Early on in the evening, the Rochester native was hitting it off with Evangeline Lim, a master’s student at NYU, who told The Post he was “nice and cute.”

The Navy Seal who was killed in Jersey City yesterday after his parachute failed to open during a Fleet Week demonstration has been identified as 27-year-old Remington Peters. Peters was a fiercely loyal role model whose accomplishments "far outweigh his years," his family said in a statement issued by the Navy. Peters is "painfully missed," the family said. "He was an angel on earth and role model to all," the statement reads. "We couldn't have been more proud of him. He lived life to the fullest and taught us to do the same." Peters was killed yesterday after he plunged into the...

NEW YORK – A small World War II vintage plane celebrating its 75th anniversary crashed in the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey on Friday, but the pilot suffered only minor injuries and was rescued, authorities said. The pilot ditched the plane, a P-47 Thunderbolt, on a part of the river near where a US Airways commercial jet carrying 155 people splash-landed in 2009 in what became known as the Miracle on the Hudson. The P-47 Thunderbolt pilot was the only person aboard, and he was being taken to a hospital, New Jersey state police Sgt. Jeffrey Flynn...

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) — If you were anywhere in San Francisco Saturday and didn’t see the Blue Angels, you likely heard them. The U.S. Navy flight squadron dazzled spectators as part of the city’s annual Fleet Week festivities. --SNIP-- Not everyone was thrilled. Representing some of the unimpressed, San Francisco supervisor John Avalos took to Twitter. “Maybe the rain and the fog means no Blue Angels! … #WishfulThinking,” Avalos tweeted. In response to a constituent, Avalos tweeted this: “U expect me to LIKE war planes buzzing SF w/feel good jingoism? Just the THOUGHT of a crash over the city should...

Rich Shelton loves airplanes and San Francisco, which shows in all his beautiful photos. He was able to take this incredible image of a Blue Angels' F/A-18 zooming through the Golden Gate bridge at Fleet Week in San Francisco.

I look forward to Fleet Week on Memorial Day Weekend every year. The city is transformed by our heroes in the armed forces. But thanks to Obama, the 2013 Fleet Week has been cancelled. 2012 Fleet Week Event Schedule | Parade of Ships USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum Visitors Guide His pigs feed at trough (the unions, SEIU, "green companies," etc.) -- while decent, hard working Americans, along with our troops and assorted targets of the enemy administration, continue to be punished by the traitor in the White House. Obama and his entourage feast on Kobe steaks, holding...

The “Occupy†movement claims to represent 99% of the people (hence their motto, “We Are the 99%â€). The US military stands for everything the Occupiers oppose; it is after all the force which imposes the evils of capitalism on the nation and the world.Wouldn’t it be interesting if, as an experiment, we arranged to have the Occupy movement and the US military each hold events in the same city on the same day — and then see which one drew more visitors? If the Occupiers truly represented the 99%, and if the military really were the musclemen for the corporations,...

I have strong feelings about the Blue Angels' annual visit. I do not like it. I find it to be a loud, violating display of military power that goes against what I stand for. During last year's Fleet Week, my students charged to our classroom's rattling windows at the first omniscient roar. With mouths gaping and eyes wide, they gazed out in hopes of seeing "The Angels" shoot overhead. We happened to be talking in class about our society's epidemic of violence and its many mediums of proliferation.

A Marine in New York for Fleet Week was struck by a car and killed early Thursday as he tried to return to his ship docked at a Hudson River pier just 200 yards away. The 22-year-old corporal was hit about 1 a.m. after a taxi dropped him and several other Marines near their ship, the USS Iwo Jima, berthed on Pier 88. His name was withheld pending notification of his family by the Marines. Earlier in the day, the "Parade of Ships" traveled grandly up the Hudson River to inaugurate the city's 24th annual Fleet Week, which draws more...

It's that time of year again and Fleet Week has descended upon the city of San Francisco. For those who, like myself, appreciate the unabashed demonstration of military prowess, not to mention the spectacular air shows of the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels, it is a time to relish. And, of course, an occasion for gloating about the matter at one's blog. It helps that self-proclaimed socialist supervisor Chris Daly's third attempt to ban the Blue Angels, due, he claims, to safety concerns (never mind that there's a higher chance of being hit by a car in San Francisco than an...

Thousands of onlookers, from toddlers to seniors, gathered along San Francisco's waterfront Saturday under brilliant skies to watch aerial stunts and precision flying as part of Fleet Week. "We've come every year for four years," said Erron Garibay, 32, of Antioch as he sat with his wife, Dawn, and their three children, ages 5 through 12. "It's just togetherness, bringing our kids out here to let them see all the jets and everything our military has," Garibay said. The events continue today with an Italian Heritage Parade from Fisherman's Wharf to North Beach beginning at 12:30 p.m., followed by an...
